Just put a post on the main page, maybe should have come here first. I just bought an '85 FJ60 and am moving from lower Alabama to Oxford next week. Any tips on good mechanics in the Oxford area (Memphis?), parts resources, tips on where to find manuals, etc., would be appreciated.

The 60 leaks when it rains, needs fresh paint, has rips in the upholstery, needs a new wiper motor, has weak a/c and needs a new muffler pipe. It's awesome.

Why does that sound so familiar? Welcome to the world of 60s! Sorry, don't know about mechanics in Oxford. S.O.R (specter off road) has the manuals new for lots of $$$. I've purchased most of mine on ebay--lots of watching. Parts: cruiserparts.net (good used parts), man-a-fre.com, JToutfitters, SOR--all landcruiser specialists. there are many others, those have been the most immediatly helpful to me. Do a search on ih8mud.

Welcome aboard! Your coming at a exciting time. Lots of stuff going on.
Might wait till Bodean posts, he may have a better idea of MS mechanics.

*Read the posts about Gray Rock & see if it might be a ride for you?

Get out!

Get out of there quick. Those people up there are nothing but a bunch of wanna- be rednecks! Nah! I'm just a Miss. State fan that has been banned from Oxford. I don't know, maybe it's just my wife trying to keep me out of trouble with the Oxford police. Welcome to the Cruiser Cult. Don't know any mechanics up there. Watch the parts for sale section of Mud. There are always 60 parts on there.

Later,

I have a friend in Oxford who will probably know who the TLC guy is up there. Let me do some checking.

Welcome! Congrats on your new 60 and your move to Oxford. I was there for 4.5 years and loved almost every minute of it.

I'm on the verge of purchasing a '90 FJ62 parts truck. The truck has the full exhaust still on it. I don't know if it will work for your 60, but let me know if you are interested in any parts. Send me a PM

Sure go ahead, wait until you move out of lower AL to buy a cruiser...
Seriously though, where were you in lower AL?
And join these guys (CottonLand). they rock!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't go to Ole Miss, so I don't have much of a dog in the Ole Miss/ State fight (the in-laws, well, that's a different story). I've been living in Mobile for the last two years; it's a good spot.

We've got a two year old and another due late January (aka: the best part of duck season...) so I probably won't make any rides for awhile but I'll check on here just in case. Thanks again for the posts, and if anyone gets a lead on a good TLC mechanic in Oxford or Memphis just let me know.

Hey man,

When I was living up there, I worked for Parts Plus on West Oxford Loop. That is the road at the Chevron near Walmart. The owner seems to know everyone in town and is a super great guy. His name is Jesse Beard. Go and buy some armor all or something and strike up a conversation. I don't think that he would steer you wrong.

Great places to eat: Old Venice Pizza and Ajax on the square. Phillips grocery across the street from the hospital. and Taylor Grocery, ask someone how to get there, you won't regret it. Don't forget to take your own beer, wine or whiskey. Talk to someone inside about the rules on that.

I spent the best nine years of my life up there!!

Good luck and best wishes to you!!!

Thanks TK. Those are all great tips; got me really looking forward to the move.

welcome to o-town... i just left oxford for Jackson, unfortunately. and I am looking for a good mechanic down here. Oxford is a great place. When you go cruisin take a good look at all the ladies whose heads will be turning to see your truck. Oxford has the best looking women in the world. Have fun cruisin! :D
