im new to the cruiser world ive always wanted one and my wife went out off town on a trip and bam i bought a 84 cruiser and a blood hound. man that was a heck of a welcoming home surprise.any way i got my cruiser in mid of nov. and ive had it at the mech. since dec 2. he is a friend of mine but this is supose to be my project. my problem is my exhaust and intake gasket is shot. we pulled it out today and the exhaust manifold came apart into three parts.what is this for and were can i get the rings to make it seal back and is this the the right thing to do, imean should i just by a set of headers to put on it. ive already put on a weber, new shocks alternator, power steering pump. ithink my cruiser is in good shape it does have 285000 miles on it, but im the 2nd owner. thanks for any help and i really glad i found this site.

Congrats from a fellow newbie! Are you and Fido gonna have to live in the Cruiser for awhile? ;)

she was actualy a lot more pissed over the dog than she was over the cruiser.she is slowly starting to lean the other way though since we havent driven it in a month

thanks klinetime for the link much appreciated.

No problem!

The ends should have some free play. You could check if your seals are okay. Not sure how to do that though.

Each end of the exhaust manifold has a couple of ring seals (like piston rings) and some wave washers. You can purchase these parts from Toyota, or from SOR, and some of the other advertising vendors may have these, although it seems like it's a toyota-specific part.

The recommended intake/exhaust manifold gasket set, by the way, is a set from FelPro. Do a search in this forum and you might even find the part number. It comes with the manifold to head gasket as well as the gaskets that go between the intake and exhaust manifolds (heat riser gasket).

thanks for the help guys we got the parts today and installed the intake and exhaust tomorrow were going to tackle the carb again. what is the purpose of the insulater between the intake and exhaust. and living in south ga is there any need for the "flapper" in the exhaust i hope not cause it is now gone.

I'm hoping you checked the manifolds with a straightedge before installing - they have a tendency to warp.

we did check with a strait edge and they looked good im ready to get her done .ive been without the truck for over a month and surfing this site for the last two nights are drivingme crazy,

is that a ceramic coated header i wouldnt know the diffrence ive seen them on a couple of the sites though. and we are in the de smog mod i think ive lighten the load by at least fifty pounds

The heat control valve is open when the engine is cold to the the hot exhaust gases up next to the intake. This helps preheat the incoming air and vaporize the fuel. The valve closes when the engine heats up to divert the exhaust gases away from the intake. You are probably OK without the valve. Just make sure you plug up the shaft holes.

careful now...

when the heat-riser flap is removed or burnt it allows hot exhaust gas to blast against the bottom of the aluminium intake manifold, often cracking it, the owner of SOR diagnosed this on my truck just by listening to it, it's a common problem. SOR sells stainless steel insulators that fit between the intake and exhaust to protect the intake. I don't know if it will protect it enough with the flap gone, but I'd guess it would. Or just get a new header and consider it your trucks christmas present for the next decade:) The crack in mine was visible on the bottom of the intake and in the top under the carb.
