I've replaced the frame in my '82 BJ60 due to the common frame rust issues. I found a solid RUST FREE frame here in Central America. The complete process is detailed in pictures at http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4924889#post4924889 because I have unlimited picture posting priveleges there.
Remember, this is Central America so the shop facilities are less than what you'd be used to at home.

Recomend a acid dip then galvonize the frame

I just looked at a owner of a 87 hj-60 project vehicle and he had sent the frame to be picked in acid then dipped in a tank of zinc. The frame looks great and probebly will never rust again. Has anyone else ever done this before?

Sounds like a plan if you have those facilities available. I probably would have done that in addition to what I did but here in Central America I'm told facilities for acid dip, galvanizing and sand blasting are not available for large items like frames.

Haryv,

Yes I have just recently acid dipped and galvanized my frame also. It only cost me $500 dollars and an hour and a halfs drive. I am restoring/modifying my crusier so instead of worrying with painting inside the boxed frame, I had figured the paint and labor would be about the same price. I will post a picture later when I've got more time.

Yeah... but I belive the labour is WAY cheaper than any other place in North America !

Mel, I'll be picking up a bezel in the next week or so and then sending everything back with my son when he goes back to college in Michigan. You'll be getting a UPS collect from there.
Do you NEED a stamped bezel only or a bezel preferably stamped?

btw the FJ45LV restoration is here http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=416239
and my daughters FJ55 restoration that was done just before we left for Central America is here http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=414794

Caleb,
I hope you don't feel bad but the acid dip/galvanizing cost you more than the frame swap cost me!

Hello,
Do you live in Cent America? What was the final build cost for your truck? How much did they charge in labor? Would something like your project be possible for someone from the US with an FJ60?

Thanks,
Zack

Yes ...

Currently in progress. Vehicle is near Bruceton Mills, WV if close stop by and check it out.

Cost ? *GULP* ... more than I thought. I don't have the facilities to do the swap safely.

Not able to find a dip tank to etch or galvanize. F

rame has been sand blasted, etched, and wll be painted with auto paint with not much hardener (prevent chips).

Sigh ... it's gettin' done ... but s.l.o.w.l.y.

We are currently living in Guatemala but our truck is registered in B.C., Canada as you can see from the licence plates. It would be entirely possible for anyone who wishes, to drive down and do the same thing that I did. You can safely say that the frame swap will cost under $1500 including a frame! You will however need to get someone like myself or another person down here to find the frame for you and arrange any prep work before coming down. Here you will likely be dealing with an HJ60 frame which is not a big problem, it only means that the engine mounts need to be swapped/relocated.

Anyone who is interested can PM me and I can make the enquires needed.

Did I mention that it makes a great vacation too!
