I'm wanting to replace my engine with a 5.7 Vortec and change out my 4 speed for a 5. I have a couple of questions, First is the H55 the best way to go with the 5.7 and Since I'm straped for cash should I hold off on the 5 speed for now or is it more cost effective to get them both done at the same time?
Thanks for the help.

It is much more cost effective to mate the H55 and the SBC and install all at once. But swapping the H55 into a truck with an H42 is not a big project. If you install any other tranny you will incur additonal expense in mating the split case and altering drive lines, etc.

I think that the 5.7L SBC with a Marks adapter and an H55F would be a sweet combo for travelling and wheeling.

Also, if you don't have the funds yet for the H55 find a H42 from a later FJ-60and bolt everything up. The later H42 and the H55 have roughly the same dimensions so driveshaft lenghts, tranny position and mounts will be the same between the two trannies. Then when you have the $1600 for the H55 you can just drop it in without changing anything.

If it were my rig I would use an NV4500, but I have seen V-8s matted to Toyota manual trannies that worked well. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. Is there any good source on the net for engines and trannys, or does anybody know a good shop in the Fr. Worth Tx area that can help out on the install.

Smog rules are sometimes a concern. You should be okay, since you are in the great state of Texas. Here in Commiefornia, it is against the rules to have a Vortec mated to a manual tranny. Any OBD-II engine and tranny are considered a married combo for smog purposes, which means Vortec/4L60E.

That is why, if I do an engine swap, it will probably be a 350 TBI, which predates OBD-II.
