Today I installed my new Cobra 18 WX ST II.

My Uniden 520 XL stopped transmitting the last day at Cruise Moab. The install was pretty simple. This radio is DIN size so it fitted perfectly under my Alpine deck unit. The Cobra 18 WX ST II allows you to scan channels, monitor 2 channels at the same time, plus it has 10 weather channels. I also comes with a front panel speaker, so you hear it pretty well.

Under the Alpine unit, I had a box. There I kept my iPod which is connected to the stereo via the rear AUX port. Since the Cobra CB is taking up that space I had to relocate the iPod.

I want to thank Big Moose for his help in the installation process.

Regards

Alvaro

PS: Now I need to set the clock.

Very nice!

Wow that's clean Alvaro.
The CB and iPod without looking cluttered, that's nice!

I remember your CB had some volume issues at DV... looks like you stepped up!

James,

In DV I was having ground issues with my CB antenna. I have my antenna on the tire carrier of my Slee rear bumper. The ground was being done through the bearings on the carrier spindle, not very good ground. Now I that I've properly grounded the tire carrier my SWR is a lot better, considering where the antenna is located. It went from 2.5 with bad grounding to 1.2 with better grounding.

Nice install Alvaro!

Looks great Alvaro.

James, Alvaro's "ground" isue is exactly what I was talking about in the other thread. A bad install and tuning will cause high SWR leading to premature radio failure. Tune your radio and antenna!

Finally, we can hear Alvaro once again...don't know if that's a good thing on not! ;)

Alvaro,

Can you post some pics of how you improved the CB grounding with the Slee tyre carrier?

Alvaro,
What antenna are you running? Assuming it's a glas whip, have you tuned it? You could probably get those SWR's flat with a little work, improving your performance greatly.

You can use a 90° "elbow" adapter to make the rear connection easier.
If you run a mag mount antenna, you can attach a foot long extension from the rear of the radio to your glove box. This would allow you to quickly connect and disconnect the mag mount antenna.

Mag mount antennas are notoriously bad.

Howdy-

How do you install that bad boy into a DIN opening? I just got one from Ebay and I was wondering if there is a bracket that installs that thing into a DIN opening...

Thanks in advance-

Rezarf,

The radio is DIN size. Installing it in my case was pretty simple. The bracket that holds the the factory radio was being used to hold my Alpine deck unit in place.
Since this model of Cobra CB is DIN size you shouldn't have any issues putting it in. If you need a bracket, ask around on your local car stereo shops. I'm sure they'll have something that will fit you.

Another pic of a Cobra 18 WX ST-II radio

I did the same CB install. It looks quite nice and blends in nicely.
The sound quality out of the speaker is a bit more bassy than I'm used to but not bad.

I've got this Cobra also.

However, a magnetic antenna did not work well with it. The transmission had alot of static in it which many people complained about.

I solved the problem by going with a Firestick and custom hardware to mount it.

Now it works great.
