Well, bit the bullet and ordered two new Odyssey 34R batteries for the beast yesterday. My secondary battery is fried (barely holds 10v and was down to 8.5v frequently at DRV. Dead!! Primary is just over 5 years old (Sears Platinum) and am just going to change it out to be conservative/safe.

4 Wheel Parts in Santa Ana never answered their phone yesterday (three tries) so I ordered them online from Auto Anything - $249+tax and free shipping! Got the Fedx ground notice - shipping from Carson, CA-no doubt an Odyssey distribution facility! Should have them easily by the weekend to put them in myself. Opted not to go with Sears Platinum again as I don't know how much longer Sears is going to be around.

That being said, and because of my anal nature and not wanting to fry my electronics, I should probably do the secondary battery first as it's separated from the primary when the truck is off. Think I need to disconnect the positive terminal first? Quite frankly, I've never watched the Sears guys install a battery and don't know if it really makes a difference, but would think logically that this would be a 'more correct' way to go to avoid any electrical issues??? EDIT - Pep Boys site says disconnect ground first on removal of old battery then positive and reverse of that on installation.

Only battery I've put in myself was the secondary when I added it to the truck and that was 6-8 years ago!

See, I told you this was an anal question from a one :wrench: mechanic! :deadhorse:

The Pep Boys site has it correct. Disconnect the ground then the positive. During the install first connect the ground and then reconnect the positive. Be careful with your back and don't allow anything to make the batter arch.

Seems like a good price on real Odysseys. I am considering a dual battery setup as well, but may just get a single Odyssey and use an Antigravity for emergency jump starting. I am trying to watch my weight :cookie:

Pep Boys says put positive on first then negative on install of new (reverse of removal).

Eric - Yes, good price and the free shipping on what, 50 lb batteries each, is great. CA tax was added, but I'd have paid that at 4WP anyway and had to drive up to Santa Ana and back!

Good Saturday afternoon project...after golf of course (pun intended).

This is correct and the reasoning behind it is; once you connect the ground the entire vehicle becomes part of the circuit. Making it easier to short the battery. Sorry, was typing from phone on the full website and not the mobile type. Harder to review.

That's electrical 101 I understand!

Hijacking my own thread to something much more important- How's Barrett??

Hard to keep a good kid down!

Great shipping -ordered yesterday. Arrived from Carson today. Got my Saturday project lined up!

short hijack: What happened to Barrett?

He was chasing girls on the playground, tripped and broke his collarbone. Boys will be boys!

Installed both batteries today. Looked at it last weekend and noticed the Odyssey batteries were 7" high and both the Platinum and Optima were 8". Odyssey sight said you 'may' need a height adapter for the installation of the 34r battery in the Landcruiser. Yep, seemed that way so you wouldn't stress 20 year old wiring! Being slightly OCD/anal and wanting to do it right the first time, I ordered the height adapters and they showed up Friday. Whooping $18 shipped. Shipping was more than 2 adapters. Couldn't find anyone local that carried the darned things! LOL! Made the batteries sit at a perfect 8", same height as the recommended size.

Batteries fit in very well. They are slightly wider than the stock 24F, but less than an inch.

Two fresh batteries - I ought to be good for another 5 years or so!

where are the pictures?

I've seen write-ups with pictures for less interesting things.
