I've been in the 80's forums for a few years now and finally made the jump to the 100's! I picked up a '98 'Cruiser with 114 K for a hair over $8500. It had a rebuilt title (reflected in the purchase price) but I had a hard time finding any problems other than a slightly discolored DS door.

I did have a couple of questions that I haven't really found answers to in my searches:

1) Differences between the 100 series trim levels? (mine is the LC model which does not have the sunroof but has the rear locker and the gold toyota badges).

2) I've noticed a bit of a chatter sound shortly after the a/c compressor turns off. It doesn't seem to be coming from inside the engine bay but more under my feet. Any thoughts on what it could be?

3) I need to rebuild the rear locker solenoid... I assume it's probably the same as the process on the FZJ 80's?

I'm pretty excited to begin the fun.

I got my rebuilt '99 for about the same price. It had a few more miles, but also came with some goodies like lift and exhaust. Despite what I've heard from others, it has worked out just fine.

1. I may be wrong, but I've had the impression that there weren't really different trim levels, just a few options like rear AC and sunroof. The gold kit was some sort of foil that could be applied to any car by the dealer.

3. Are you sure you need to rebuild it? They can be a bit slow to engage, particularly if they haven't been used recently. Mine was a bit slow the first few times I used it. I try to engage the locker every now and then in the driveway just to keep it functioning a bit more smoothly.

Thanks for the info regarding the lockers... I'll keep cycling it over the next week or two and see if it loosens up.

I'll keep y'all posted as to how the rebuilt title pans out.

I've already gleaned a ton of great info from you guys already!

Congrats! I just got my 99 lifted! Have fun with it!

For some reason my radio connector is different from the standard Toyota radio harness. Is there any reason why this would be... i don't see it as being an upgraded radio system - I haven't found a 6 disk changer (where would it live if I did have one?). It only has one plug behind the dash but two plugs on the back of the radio.

Any help would be great.

Here are a couple of pics of the radio, harness and "toyota" adapter I have:

The bottom plug is my stock radio plug.
The top plug is the regular Toyota wiring adapter plug.

Help me out guys... what am i missing? :bang:

Ok.... I finally got the wiring figured out - it's the 15 pin - amp bypass harness I needed.

I got the stereo installed but now find out that I have no AM radio reception. I didn't have any on the old radio either and I thought that it might have been just the deck, but now my new radio doesn't pick up the AM stations either. What the heck? Is there a separate AM antenna or something?

By the way, make sure you've put it into 4 wheel low. I wasn't aware that it had to be, so of course, it didn't work when I tried it in 4 wheel high.

I'm a newbie here but a common nuisance noise under the engine bay that is easy to fix has been the heat shield on the cat converter. I read a thread under the FAQ for hundies on it. My friend just bent his off but most are using a 4" hose clamp wrapped around the entire cat; tighten down and problem solved.
