I found a rust free 78 fj45 in central Australia and having it freighted home to Coffs Harbour. I also have a 1980 HJ45 as a parts car and I wont to swap motors and run the H motor in the FJ. I need to know if the diff ratio's are the same in both 45's. If anyone needs a good 45 cab and guards I have a fairly rust free unit.

congrats!

My guess is yes, but I really don't know.

Don't waste your time with the H, just go out and find a good 2H instead.

Whats the problem with the H motor ?
I'm thinking they would be cheap to run and if I'm not happy I can put the 2h in later. I have a 1991 80 series Saraha turbo diesel for touring and was just going to use the 45 for a work truck and hard off road duties. I like the H and 2h motors because they can run on fish and chip oil in the future when fuel gets scarce or to expensive.
Cheers

The H-motor will be good and reliable, just sluggish even for a diesel. You have it there so you may as well use it. But if it dies, go straight for a factory turbo model. 12H-T, 13B-T or 1HD-T IMO.

The 2H is more reliable, better parts availability, more power and much easier to mount power steering pumps and A/C compressors onto as well. I've had 2 HJ 45s and I'll never use a H motor again.

I agree on the 12ht and if I find a rusty or smashed 60 series with a good engine and 5 speed box it will be fitted. The truck is still in transit but there's a few photo's on flea bay. Item number 110875226513. The guy with the winning bid never contacted the owner so I got it for $1.500. When it arrives I will take some better photo's and post them up.

I drive for a heavy tow truck company so a turbo 12ht will come up. Its a waiting game to get a 60 or 75 wreck at a good price. I cant find my 40 series manual's so can anyone answer the diff question ?

H Diesel

My 1980 HJ45 Troopie has an "H". It's a dog but extremely reliable. I live in LA so 40 mph is flying. I plan to put in a 12HT when she dies. Only 114K miles.

I hope your joking about 40 mph being flat out with the H engine ? If this is the truth I will leave the petrol engine in until I find 2h or 12ht engine.

Used to be able to do 115 km/h in my old HJ 45, it was fully tapped in 4th and screaming though. Getting there takes a while though.

I picked the 45 up and found two rust spots about as big as a thumbnail in one door and the bonnet. The engine runs like crap with a brand new top end gasket set and two door handles on the cab. The floor mats look new with slight surface rust under them. Both mud guards are cracked where the support bolts are broken underneath. Its got the original paint and trim so I'm very pleased with this truck. I will need a complete rubber kit for this car before stripping her down for paint so if any of you guys have a lead where to buy please let me know.
Cheers

The H in my HJ is fine at sea level. Yes it's pokey but we don't race these vehicles. It is SOOOO reliable; just bullet proof.
I have a 12HT that I never got around to installing.

I should mention, I do have the 5 speed connected o the H.

Oh, at 11000' the H is great on the trails but VERY slow (and black smoking) on asphalt (read, faster speeds)

The problem with the 2f engine running so rough was it had 6 different brand plugs and the manifold is leaking. I will get this engine running smooth again because I done a compression test and each cylinder came up equal at 165 CCP. Once I sort it out I probably sell the 2F and H motor and fit a 2h diesel as you guys advised. I'm very keen to run this truck on veggie or fish and chip oil to keep it cheap on fuel.
Cheers for all the info guys

I fitted a 1975 carb and manifold to the truck and its running great. I can stand a stubbie on the rocker cover and and get no head on the beer so she's running nice and smooth. I will get it registered with the 4.2 petrol engine and then drop a diesel in it after my son and I have a play in the great dividing range behind Coffs. We have some great off road tracks through the state and national parks.
