So, I discovered that the tailgate tail lamps were not illuminating. Since there are a fair number of 100 series in town, I saw one the other day with its brake lamps on and sure enough, mine are burned out. So, purchased some long life bulbs and did the change. I sure don't like removing cardboard panels since they tear so easily, but here's the procedure.

Put on a Yakima MegaWarrior rack. What's Christmas in Montana without a Land Cruiser and going to get a Christmas Tree?

Great pic! How many miles on your LC? And what wheels are those? Don't look like the stock 18's that came standard in 03?

Cool, I've never seen those on a Hundy. I like the idea of having 17's as tire cost is usually less than 18's and not sure you give up much.

Just went to look at an '03 today with 118K miles on it, but it spent the last 5 years on Nantucket and all the salt air has done it's job with corrosion. Exterior was nice, had aftermarket 18 in wheels with Kuhmo's (not a fan), but interior was tired and looked like past owner really didn't give it much love. So, I passed. Think I need to look in the dry states and have one shipped.

Being in Montana, how's the rust on yours? Is the tail gate latch rusted out? Seems common around here.

Mine started life in Arizona and a little time in North Dakota. It's clean with no rust issues.

By the way, I've been learning a lot about these and the 03 year is really cool because of the 5 speed, last year of the trans dip stick, updated front grille and lights, option of 17's and cost to find a used one. I originally wanted the 18's but the 17's have really grown on me and add a rare, unique look to the Land Cruiser. I think they use mag chloride here so cars are not as rusted as straight salt states.

Yea, I'd really like an '03, but will take the cleanest '03 to '05 I can find. Did you travel to get yours?

I been watching your thread, toyotaman. Good work! I'm still working thru issues on my Hundy as well. Same year as yours. I have the 18 inch rims, tho'. Got my 90k service coming up.

RND1 - you're right on it to hold out for a non-rust truck. I bought mine last year. It was parked on a vacant lot in Billings, Montana. Had a "for sale" sign in the window. One owner with 70-some thousand miles. Needed some work and some cleanup, but no rust issues at all. The used rigs are better out here than they are in the east.

The Hundy is a beast; I love it!

I bought it in Bismarck, ND. I have a friend who on the side will go pick up vehicles for people for a good price. He flew to Bismarck and drove it back. I have an extensive list for buying a vehicle this way which has worked well for me.

Great story - hope I can find one like that! Very low mileage for an '03. I like the idea of buying a rust free LC from the south or west, but the reality of pulling it off is harder. Time and cost to fly all over to check out
LC's doesn't work in my favor and I'm too anal to buy an LC without seeing and driving it. Just waiting for a pampered 03 to show up in one of the affluent suburbs around here that has been relegated to Nanny's car.

Thanks for the compliment. I have a few other minor things to deal with, but haven't spent much time on it as I am building an Isuzu Trooper up right now. What kind of issues have you had?

The PO really whack-jobbed the brakes. I had to have them re-done with Toyota parts. Also, PO had over tightened the front wheel bearings. Ruined them. I had that all fixed up too. Then put on 4 new shocks, too. Alignment.

Put on new tires. Cleaned the washer fluid bottle.

Next up: cabin air filter fix-up. Heater hose tees. Hood struts. Hatch struts. 90k service.

This thing is a princess! And she's sucking me dry!

:-)

Edit: also did 2 door lock actuator motors!

What kind of shocks did you go with and do you notice any ride quality differences?

What's up with the heater hose T's? I think I saw something about this somewhere.

Mine doesn't have the cabin air filter.

This car is absolutely amazing in the snow and ice. I can't get over how much safer it is than any other car I've ever owned.

I bought OEM Toyota shocks. My Toyota dealer said the rears were failing, IIRC. I just replaced em all.

The truck has 2 tees in the heater hose system. One of them gets brittle and if it fails, the truck is dead. Some folks recommend they be changed about same time as 90k service.

Mine doesn't have the filters either. I bought the parts and am changing mine so it does have the filters. :-)

Hundy = Best snow truck ever!
