Well tonight I bought a 99 with rear locker and all the bells and whistles except leather (I actually wanted cloth) and 80k miles for $23,000. The car is in perfect condition, we couldnt find even one blemish. What do you guys think? Fair deal?

Thanks,
BC

Anything that I should have looked at right away? Preventive maintenance?

Thanks,

Congrats!!! Take it on some loose gravel and engage the e-locker to check it. Don't check it on asphalt. It will probably be sticky and slow to engage b/c more than likely it is unused. Also, start planning for the Timing Belt change. It's not time for it yet but it will be soon, 90k if I remember correctly. I'd Change all of my fluids unless you knew without a doubt the previous owner took care of these items recently. That's cheap insurance.

That's a good price. They have really dropped in the last couple of months with the increase in gas prices. Just a couple of months ago I looked at a 2000 with 65K and it went for $31K. Your timing for this purchase was perfect.

Cloth units seem to be tough to come by. My cloth '91 looked great at 180k whereas my '98 leather looks pretty tough. I'd much prefer cloth. Did you just get lucky w/ the cloth or did you search for it?

I don't know if I call that fair. It kinda depends on the market... But my buddy picked up a 98
w/o locker with 80k on the ticker for 16,500.

Actually I just got lucky with it. I had given up my quest for a Land Cruiser after looking at one last beat 80. We just on a fluke decided to drive past one last dealership and low and behold there it was. I am having some withdrawls on trading my 02 4runner Sport 4x4 with 40K. But I did get 18k for it and it had seen some good trail use. I just hope the 99 is a reliable machine like you all say it is :)

Another dealer told me that in socal there are no cloth interiors imported. This car is from socal so dont exactly believe all they tell you...

Thanks,
BC

Just curious - Why get rid of a 4-Runner with 40k miles in exchange for a LC with 80k?

Just because the 4runner was a little too small. Hauling 4 guys to a business lunch is a little tight. It is a good car though.

I think you're right. Almost every cuiser comes loaded to the hilt, including leather. I was going to special-order a truck with no sunroof and cloth seats, but then ended up buying a used unit with 18k miles on it. I decided for $20k in savings off sticker, I could endure leather and a sunroof.

MoJ: Are you serious? No offense, but there's not a human being alive that wouldn't rather have a 100 like mine with 80K miles (or any other 100 for that matter) over 4Runner. You can't compare. It's like Pitbull asking or receommending a new 4Runner over a Cruiser to members. Just because they share a motor doesn't mean they're similar. They're not. No comparison. You think I would swap my 80K mile 100 for a NEW 4Runner? I'd be insane!

My 4runner was the old body style. Much nicer than new IMHO. There really is alot of difference.

>>>Are you serious?<<<<

YES.

>>>Just because they share a motor doesn't mean they're similar.<<<

Didn't say they were.

>>>You can't compare. <<<

Anything can be compared.

>>>You think I would swap my 80K mile 100 for a NEW 4Runner?<<<

 I don't really care what you would do. :flipoff2:

I would, especially for a new one, and I'm a Cruiser nut.

You're funny MoJ. I'm trying to figure out why we have 4Runner lovers on a 100-series forum? Any how it's a gas to read this stuff. I'm heading to Ouray Colorado in my lowly 100 in about an hour. I think I'll wheel the passes and Poughkeepsie Gulch with a banner on my 100 offering it in trade for a new 4Runner. I'm hope those 4Runner owners will "trade down" to my Cruiser. ;)

Thanks. On a serious note now.....I hope there's water up there this year. In '02 it was dry as a bone. I think the only water was doing Black Bear in the rain. Hey, there's where you want a smaller rig...Black Bear Pass!

Shotts, go drive a new 4runner AWD with the V8 and 5 speed auto and then tell us how you feel. I drove several, example a LX470 with 60K miles, LC's with 65K miles and the new 4runner. The 4runner fit my needs. I decided I wanted all of the important mechanical stuff versus the wood and leather for a great price NEW. I've alway said that I love the 100 series LC/LX and I love the FZJ80 even more (wish they still made them for the USA, I would of bought a new 80). The 4runner is just an alternative. Smaller, quicker, better power to weight ratio, I like the new looks of the 4th generation now better than the 100 series. JMHO

PS you can compare them, I did. Worked for me :)

For those with a new 4Runner, are they hard to see out of? I looked at a few and from sitting in the driver's seat the dash felt really high and the roof really low, which I did not like at all. Maybe it was just me. I'm not bashing the Runner at all, I love to see different vehicles out on the trails. Are there liftkits for the new 4Runner yet? I would think they would be similar to what's going on the GX470 in that magazine buildup, which looked pretty sweet...I'm accepting donations to my GX470 fund.. :)

Pitbull I knew you'd show up. I know what "get's ya".

I'm an avid off-roader and that's where my "bias" comes from. I took so much crap from AZ LC owners about the 100 (it was my first Cruiser) that it drove me nuts. All I heard was IFS stinks, the 100's too heavy, blah blah you need an 80. That's one reason I was so motivated to highly modify the 100. Now, nobady says a word because the 100's proven itself. It's very capable and it can hang anywhere my equally modified 80 can (except where the 100 might not fit due to it's size). I'm also biased some because of the extra luxury the 100 gives us over lesser trucks including a 4Runner/GX.

Regarding your comments, I think you're right on. Heck the 4Runner/GX is a super vehicle. It's also easier to modify for off-road than a 100, though because of it's underside it's not as capable off-road. In fact, after we drove right up, we strapped up a lifted new 4Runner up the ledge at Charouleau Gap (the picture you see me going down...my icon. So yes, I agree that a 4Runner is a better choice for a everyday rig than a Cruiser overall for most people. Take it one step further....I've always admitted a Sequoia is a better choice overall too for 98% of the drivers out there because you get more space, a killer truck and save $18K. I don't think though anybody would argue the 100 is the supreme truck.

Lastly, and this may surprise you....before we bought our Tacoma TRD (we wanted another rig to keep the miles off the Cruisers) we checked out the 4Runner (not an option for us) and a Lexus GX470. We liked the Lexus with the self disco'ing swaybars though decided against it because of the poor underside design...especially that very low driver-side mounted gas tank. I could see us mangling this vehicle and struggling too much off road. So, we went Tacoma. Heck, that thing is amazing too!

So that's it...from a 4-wheeler perspective. If I wasn't an off-road nut I'd still want the Cruiser, but......there might be a blown GX470 in the garage instead (ooo, I didn't admit that did I?),

About the dash and fit, I never noticed a problem but everyone is different.
