So the meeting was pretty interesting. There was a HUGE turnout for the OHV group and I think many members of the committee didn't think we would get this involved. My main problem with what they are doing is that they are using the term/phrase "Passive Recreation" to determine what seems to be the main premise of the Open Space Management group. This seems almost contradictory to me. But I do need to do some more reading and get better educated before I can stand up and state something.

Yeah... Though they haven't actually DEFINED the term "passive recreation" it invokes the picture of NO MOTORIZED ACCESS!! That too is the BOS"s idea as well as they describe it as "non impacting recreation" and is very exclusionary to the OHV crowd
The place was packed and as stated by gregnash there was a HUGE showing by the atv and motor cross crowd. There were a fair number of wheelers there too. Most of which were younger. That was good to see. Mark weeks and I were there as well.
Their focus is the Carson proper area, right around the city.
So the meeting was intended for defining the term passive recreation.
One lady on the BOS was ON OUR SIDE and was actually the person that brought this meeting to the OHV communities attention. I don't recall her name though.
Clearly, there were at least a couple of the BOS members that were AGAINST OHV use and one (Juan) was called out on it as he had historically been very vocal about that.
Eldorado TRAIL is PRIVATE PROPERTY and is to be CLOSED to motorized recreation. The V and T will be going through that, apparently. That was interesting...
Next big one for us is the thurs. at the Carson valley in. This is the BLM workshop and I'd encourage as many of us that can be there to go!!!

BTW...this is ONE of several meetings for this project! SO the meat of what "stays and go's" is still yet to come.
Ill keep an ear to the ground to find out when more of these will take place.

Greg,
Sorry we missed you. I think you parked behind me in your FJ60??
Mark W and I were sitting toward the back right corner.
I had to leave when the PISSED US soldier was speaking.
Donno what happened after that. Did I miss anything?

Thrusday at 430 at the carson valley inn in Minden...
Try and be there! This is for KEEPING ACCESS in the BLM for the route designations.

Yup that was me unless there was another FJ60 that showed up and left before I did. Mine is easy to spot as the license plate, NV Classic 80s plate, says FJ6TY.

The pissed soldier was actually a family friend (or atleast the brother of a family friend) and I understand what he was saying, although he came at it with guns blazing before the fact. He left 4yrs ago without having many restrictions only to come back and lots of restrictions have been changed. He left everyone, including Juan, speak and they informed him of how things are changing but they, the committee, are there as an advisory and do not make the policy changes.

I felt a bit wishy-washy from Juan as he seemed to contradict himself quite a bit stating he would be "for OHV use" but also that he was pushing the "passive recreation" side that did not include this? Again, as I said before, how can you define a committee that is called OPEN SPACE MANAGEMENT strictly by defining one aspect as it seems they are trying to do?

I know that Donna Inversin is on our side as she is the President of Carson City Muscle Powered and has been fighting to get extra land use opened not only to the mtb, trail running, and equestrian community but also to OHV (creating multi-use trails that have paths for "downhill bike). The other woman you were talking about is Terri something or other.

I have a feeling that the rest of the committee, include the chair, is completely against OHV expansion, and to some extent limiting the use. But they seemed quite "perturbed" when one of their own was the reason the OHV, motocross, etc. crowd had showed up enmasse. Juan and the Chair (cant remember his name) both stated how they had sanctioned many meetings without the public opinion ON PURPOSE. So they were basically making decisions/recommendations in a vacuum, because that always turns out best for everyone.

My favorite of the night was the gentlemen that got up complaining about the biking community cutting new trails (I have not seen any) where every they please and the road bikers (sprocket jockeys :D ) and why they had access to the road and taking up the entire lane! I road bike to work everyday because I can and really my commute is short enough that driving BeBe to work would serve nothing more than to burn some gas and not even barely warm up the oil. I have to fight with traffic, I am respectful and expect the same from the drivers around me. But in the same breath I treat my ride as though they do not know I am there (as most don't) and thus attempt to keep myself safe as well as the drivers.

But those types of people with more of an agenda for complaints about another group are always going to be there. I agree with my friend that if they are saying they need to view these places on a case by case basis, hey I have more than enough room in my truck and would be more than happy to take them up there on my own.:steer:

Oh and I was the guy towards the back with a grey/green baseball cap and brown hoodie on (just got down from the beach in Tahoe).

I was the second to the last person that spoke and then waited to see if they had any determinations or decisions. They were farting around with the definition of " passive recreation" (so I left) before they made a vote to accept as is or change it to include motorized vehicles it was apparent that at some point we will need to live with this term/definition. It will come to haunt us just like it has in Tahoe with the TRPA knobs. Now that they have a term for closing roads I can see in the future that some greenie on the BOS wants to designate an "area" for passive recreation and ooops there goes our road/area. I would put $$ on it.

That was the impression that I got too.

Well the best we can do is show up to the meetings when we can and make sure our voice is heard collectively and singularly.

Anyone going to the BLM workshop tonight???
I'm heading down right from work!!

I would like to go but am scheduled til 4:30. Is it one of those things where you can show up whenever of do you need to be there on time?:hhmm: I could probably be there by 5:30 if I leave for work.

Mark,

It's an informal thing.
The way it works is there are stations set up w the BLM and you just go to the stations that you're interested in and talk w/ the BLM folks and comment w/ them.
Some stuff won't really be of huge concern to us as it has to so w/ range lands and water ways and such. At least from an off road perspective...
Apparently I was mistaken on the times. It's 5-7.
Good for me as that leaves a bit more time!! :)

Keith

Not sure if I am going to be able to make it, guess technically I could walk down as I live like a half mile away. BeBe developed a very strange rough idle today while I was headed back to work from lunch errands. Was coming through a stop light and went to shift and the accelerator stuck, had to pull on it with my foot to get it to disengage and function normally. But after that it developed the rough idle (almost seems like it is missing). She drives great when she is driving but once I let her idle then I get the weird rough idle. I have a feeling that one of the many crack vacuum lines finally gave up the ghost as I can hear a massive vacuum leak when the engine is running and I am poking around in the engine bay.
Looks like next week I will be ordering all new vacuum line and the following weekend will be starting on the desmog!

Very productive meeting.:) We may be the proud sponser of the Eldorado canyon trail! At least we put in our bid. Most all of the trail is BLM and only a small portion at the end(intersection at end of trail) is private.

Also the guy that was at the Carson board of sup (Juan:flipoff2:he was there.)for open space and rec. of CC actually wants to run :steer:Eldorado with us, oh and his boss. They tabled the passive rec. term as the board could not agree on a definition. Juan was referred to in the above posts and was the guy trying to get the def. of P. rec. pushed thru-he says cause it is his job.?? Any way it is gone for for now.:bounce::clap::bounce2:

Glad that it turned out so well. Hopefully we can get a group together to take him on some of the local trails and we can keep that definition tabled until we can get some other items to be defined with it.

When/if you guys do schedule something to go out with him, let's try and make it a group event and get as many people there. I would love to take BeBe out with an experienced group on some easier trails and see what she can really do.

It was a very worth while experience.
I was very impressed at how appreciative that the BLM staff were that we were all there to help them, help us. They were all willing to answer and and all questions we had.
All the maps were GPS coordinates, which was difficult for those who don't use GPS (mark and I). However...
Mark knowing a lot of these areas, he was able to find eldorado canyon!!!!
I was of the impression that that trail was to be closed!!! It lies squarely in one of the BLM zones!!
So we stickers it, submitted our comment about it and put in for BBCNN to sponsor it as an adopt a trail program.
Also, BLM staff are more than willing and actually offered to come speak at a meeting so we all can find out more about the process and answer any questions we have!!

Great experience!!!
So glad that I made the trip out!!

Btw... Comments are still being accepted till the 30 of nov. (?). All the maps that were displayed are on the web site and comments can be submitted there as well.
You guys w GPS will have an easier time w/ it.

So if you missed the workshop... You can still voice you comments!!!

Awesome work guys. I appreciate your efforts, I have not been able to attend any of the meetings, so it's nice to know we have a voice.

So is it now up to BLM to decide who gets to "adopt" the trail? If BBCNN is chosen, what is the responsibility going to be? Trail clean up, maintenence, etc.?

Again, thanks for your efforts, I look forward to a hopefully promising future.

Jack

There is a BLM staffer that we would work w/ in the maint. And improvements of the trail.
As I'm to understand, we would contact him directly...
Got the biz card of the project manager Colleen whom I spoke with and I'm assuming that she would direct us to that person.
The route is 2011.
I'm not sure IF there is another club or group that actually WANTS to adopt a trail, but we had discussed that idea at the meetings and just offered it up in this workshop along w/ our comments.
