Do I need to take the steering wheel off? If so, how is this done?

TIA

actually I did that...the top half I can easily slide in..but the bottom half I can't...seems almost like I should remove the wheel...just got a new one from cdan as my old one was broken

No, it is a clamshell type assembly. Look underneath for screws that hold the two pieces together.

the screws are long gone....it's just haning there

try tilting the wheel?

I know I've had mine apart, pretty sure I took all of it off and put it back on without any drama.

tried tilting also...it almost seems like I have to break to old one (bottom piece) off to remove it..and then to get the new one it I would have to first go over the wiper lever...then slide it in..that's why I'm thinking I have to remove the steering..now I did this in a rush yesterday..today I would look at it again..but it really appears that I have to remove the steering...was just checking here to see if someone had done it recently..

I just did this. Here's the trick:

1) Remove all the screws. Make sure you note where the long ones go and where the short ones go.

2) Tilt the steering wheel all the way up.

3) Pull the bottom cover off BOTTOM end first. You have to flex it a bit, but you can get the bottom back part out from between the dash and the stearing wheel.

4) Once the bottom is off, you can twist it a bit and slide over the indicator lever.

5) After you get the bottom off, tilt the stearing wheel back down and take off the top cover.

To reinstal, just do this in reverse.

I just loosened the bottom part of the dash under the column and the bottom portion of the cover came off like buttah. Its only like four screws or something to loosen the lower dash, very easy to do.

Thanks!

I think I paid $80 for mine, but that was before I knew about CDan.

I also stretched out the need for one by several years. The problem is that the plastic breaks, but you can rebuild them with JB weld and a few washers. I could have done the same fix again, but I'm already in the pissing away money mode so I figured why stop now....

Mine only has the bottom half...

Anyone know a source for cheap steering column cowls?

Hayes

cruiserparts.net might be able get you a nice used one for cheap. They are only listing a new piece for 91-94 80's but you can email them and ask if they have a good used one. Probably be around $30.
