Gents,

Need a little help. I have a milling machine and a lathe in NJ that need a ride to IN west of Cincinnati. Both machines weigh 10,000 pounds (yes, 5 tons...each). Does anyone have access to a trailer and/or truck that can move one or both machines? Willing to pay a reasonable price to do this. Will load here in NJ with a track hoe. Hope to unload myself in IN with pipe rollers, a winch and a great deal of care.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Nick Jennings

My old man, (the iron worker) used to move commercial machinery like this all the time. The only thing I got are some come alongs. Larger straps / some chokers and a dad missing the tip of his thumb.

Sorry

Nick,
Have you checked into renting a 20 foot moving truck from penske/ryder/budget....?

They should be able to tell you the Gross carrying capacity and the loading height.

A cheap ticket to Newark NJ and a oneway truck rental back to IN may be the easiest way to get it done.

Another possibility would be to sell the machines in NJ and buy what you need from a failed shop in northern IN. very depressed area, lotsa machinery floating around Ft wayne.

Jim,

I'm standing in NJ right now. Yes, I've looked at the rental vans and they're not quite up to the task. As for selling and rebuying, I looked into that since there's a lot of stuff around Cincinnati as well. But right now I'm into the two machines and 3/4 ton of tooling for $1000 and I know these machines are in good condition. Most of the time these things are either get it the heck outa here or $15K.

Gotta friend here with a nice gooseneck/Dodge that I might try to borrow or get him to make a couple trips... Gotta call a couple freight brokers to see what commercial shipping would cost. Also need to check with rigging companies for a quote. Was hoping I could find a Cruiserhead with a big truck and a sense of adventure...

Nick,
How sure are you about the weights of the machines? My 14' trailer weighs 1100# empty, and has 7000# axles and tires. If it is loaded tongue heavy (the way I like it), maybe 1000# on the tongue, that leaves #6900 of trailer cargo capacity.

The duallie will carry 1000# of tongue and another 1500# in the bed (<7000 empty, 10000GVW).

That's all I got. LMK if that helps any.

Jim,

Ran the rollback over the scales before we unloaded the machines. I'm pretty sure on the weight. :) No way I'd put this stuff on a standard car hauler. I was gonna try that until we hauled it up onto the rollback. I think it would fold a standard hauler in half! I don't think I wanna buy you a new trailer, Jim!

I think I have a local Cruiserhead lined up to move them both; one at a time. Working out the details over the next couple days. Looking forward to getting busy on some paying machine work.

Thanks!
Nick

Nick my old man has a 3500 Dodge dump and a 22' or so equipment trailer, but I highly doubt he will loan them out. I'll make a call though. Oh and it requires a cdl.

Just curious, why a CDL for a one ton PU and a trailer?
Isn't CDL for stuff w/ airbrakes or over ~12ton GVW?

Trailer weight and truck weight exceeded the max. Now that I think about it his trailer is at least 28' or so. He was pulled over 3x for it and finally got his cdl. He's got a couple of backhos and dozers he tows. He thinks he can get 3 40s on the trailer and one in the dump bed. I'm slowly trying to persuade him to let me load it up and take it to moab or texas next year.

Marty,

I have a cousin with a class A CDL but I'd also guess your father is not likely to let that go east with a bunch of folks he doesn't know. If he's up for a trip to NJ let me know. Heck, have him bring your Cruiser and we can hit Paragon for a day as well! :) NJ is nice this time of year...

Think he would be willing to bring a large fork truck to my house to unload the machines if I get them there? Does he have a fork truck capable of lifting 5 ton on rough ground? Or a track hoe to set them in front of the door so I can roll them in maybe?

Nick...I really doubt my dad would make a 6 or 7 hour round trip to help. I'll see what he says though.
