I need some quick schooling on FJs
I have owned two cruisers in the past an ‘84 FJ60 & ’95 FZJ80 both with OME, front rear tire carriers & set up for off road /back road trips. I sold the ’95 a year ago before fuel really got expensive & got a ’06 dbl cab Tacoma 2wd I get right under 20 mpg in town using sysnthic oil.
I’ve missed having a cruiser & gettting back into places to explore so I’ve been looking at used FJs. I found a ‘07 at a Toyota dealer for what seems to be a good price under 20K with 28K miles.
Has the V6, 6 speed manual transmission, full time 4x4 (not sure I like the full time the 80 was full time and got crappy mileage) I know 6sp only comes in full time.
What kind of mileage are you all getting with this set up?
This FJ also has:
Differential w/Locking Feature (?)Locking rear diff, Control Traction (VSC), Upgrade package #1 A-TRAC, 17” alloy wheels, TRD quick shift 6 speed, factory brush guard, silver/white
What do I need to look at; I’ve heard about cracks in the body under the hood,
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
K

Not quite as robust off road due to not having a solid front axle...but more civil on road even when modded.

Plus more creature comforts but bigger than a jeep

Our TRD has a 3" Toytec Lift, WAAG XS Rack, and Lightforce Lights. On a good day I get about 18mpg on the highway. Back & forth to work (2 miles each way in traffic), I get about 16. Of course, I didn't get the FJ for its mileage :)

You can look for "Bulges" or "Cracks" on the front fenders beneath where the hood sits. They're not 'rare' but they're not 'common' either. I'm on the 2nd FJ & haven't seen any cracks yet.

Only other thing to keep in mind is that in SOME '07's (Usually w/a manufacture date before 11/06), the rear diff gears are not heat treated properly and CAN (but probably won't) fail in certain situations. IMHO if you're driving the truck properly (not gunning it w/the diff locked) you're less lightly to blow the rear diff.

That's about it....with 28K miles, I'd make sure they change ALL the fluids (including the diffs) before you drive away. The breather in the rear diff can let water in if it gets submerged. I replaced the fluid on both FJ's at about 20K miles & the diff fluid showed premature wear.

Good luck!

Drove from NH to FL and back for Thanksgiving. Calculated w/ GPS got 17.0 mpg

Inspect front windshield like a tax auditor. Any little chip etc. have them replace it.
