Hi, I need some input from anyone who has used POR-15 Epoxy Putty and POR-15 POR-Patch. I just removed my top on my FJ45 and found a bit of corrosion rust and small hole on the bottom area's of the posts and top sections were the roof meets the side's. See photo.
I do not want to weld as the metal is very thin. I do not want to use Bondo if I can help it. I saw that POR has the products mentioned above. I was thinking one or both may be the ticket as long as I can paint the repaired area.
Anyone have any input on the products and their clams.

I have been finding the same type of rust on my cab.

I have been grinding/blasting to the point that you have yours at and spraying with Rust Converter, and then brushing on Chassis Saver.

The people at the auto body supply shop said that Chassis Saver is the newer technology POR15. I have been working on it this summer, so my method is not time tested.

I welded patches whereever metal had dissapeared. If the metal was thin, I just filled any blowouts with more weld. It all ground down nice, although I am sure the inside of the patch would look like s***e.

I can tell you that the Chassis Saver sticks like a SOB and dries as hard as rock, but cannot comment on it's claim to chemically change the rusty bits and stop further corrosion.

The top of the door jamb looks like a good cadidate for the rust converter/chassis save and the midway part looks as if it could easily take a welded patch...if you have that option.

If you are really anal about getting it perfectly looking, after the Chassis Saver you could use spot putty to smooth out the pitting.

45Kevin thanks for the reply, I am kind of at the mercy of a body shop for the welding part as I have only a small 110v wire feed and a stick welder. I was thinking that maybe Silicon-Bronze Brazing rod would fill in most of the surface pitting and the in holes that have started then grind it down to shape. I want to swab or flood the inside with rust converter as much as possible to help slow the prosess of rusting. I will use the POR 15 Rust Converter. I will be stopping by a shop today to see what they can do for me. A coulpe of photos of some of the other rust.

A 110 wire feed is what I have. The are great for welding sheet metal.

With tinspips, or a grinder with a cut-off wheel, a hammer, vise and pliers you could make all the little patches you need.

Go for it.

And post pics.
 
I've used POR Patch with good success, mainly on underbody sealing duties & smoothing over small pinholes only. I'd redo those areas w/ new 16 ga. metal. Cut it back to where you're welding to the corners & to the weld mat'l. at the post. 110v buzz box will be adequate for this job. You'll be happier knowing you did it right & not gooping on some filler stuff.
 
Rust repair-done right

I tend to agree about the feeling better doing in right. Not big on putties. I might use the filler for the potted area and the pin holes. I was thinking of the Tig method of filling with Silicon-Bronze brazing rod after a good basting of the area. The local weld shop guy seems to see no problem with building up an area to close-in that hole with the bronze rod and filling the blistered surface area also. Quote of $30
