Hello, I just got a steal of a deal on an 86 bj 70. It;s in beautiful running condition and has lots of recent body work, but the trans doesn't like to stay in either first or second when you let off the pedal. I have sourced rebuild kits for the trans but i am wondering if this is a do it yourself job or are there special tools required? How intensive is this ? Is it really technical or a simple disasembly ? I am pretty mechanically inclined just inexperienced when dealing with the trans. Thanks for any help !!

P.S. I will post some pics of my steal when I get it home tomorrow.

You will need some good bearing pullers.
Nothing too technical about them, they are based on the old landcruiser 4 sp.
You ll also need to do the transfer case.

you will need some bearing pullers with long legs and small ends to get in between the bearings and the trans housing, and you probably need a torch to heat the bearings, they are usually very tight on the shaft.
You need a manual if this is your first one,l have rebuilt many.
The transfercase have to some apart before the tranny, you might as well rebuild it too.
Are you sure the trans is bad?
HAVE YOU CHECK THE BUSHING AT THE END OF THE SHIFTER AND THE SHIFTER SEAT ON THE TOP OF THE TRANS???

Why the transfer case? What's involved with that? lol

Its a split case and must be pulled apart anyway. If the gearbox needs work, the t/case wont be far behind.

You might want to pay close attention to the gearbox shaft output spline where it goes into the t/case.
They often wear here. You dont need to replace the shaft if its bad, there is a mod that utilises the unused part of splines.

I haven't checked anything out yet but the PO thought it could be syncros and I'm not familiar with the guts of these things so I never considered the shifter bushing. It has a hard time down shifting and up shifting you really have to work the throttle perfectly to get it into gear.

Sounds like synchroes. If its the nylon bush on the end of the gear stick it will has some up/down movement

When the bushing went on my H55, it was really difficult for me to get it in gear. I'd check that first just because it is infinitely easier to do than rebuilding the transmission.

Thanks for all the responses. I had a look over this thing and it's officially pooched. I am wondering now, will the 4 speed from my 81 3b equiped bj 60 fit in my 70 without modification?

l don't remember exacctly, the 4 speed is about 3" shorter that the 5 speed,it will bolt up but you will need new driveshafts.
