I must be a dumbass. I've searched the forum and inspected the vehicle and can't figure out how to tighten the belts. Right now the a/c belt is in the most need of help. I loosened the idler and found the adjuster from below with a long extension but couldn't get any tightening action.
Can someone point me to an online manual or give me a quick rundown?
As an aside, we got back last week from Durango, CO. Flat-towed the 62 out there behind the motor home and went trail riding every day for almost a week. Good times and the 62 performed very well-getting a best tank 16.4 mpg and a worst of 13.5. Now that vacation's over there's work to do on the FJ.
Thanks!

there is a nut on the front of the idler pulley that needs to be loosened before adjusting the adjuster nut. the adjuster nut-bolt- needs to be turned CCW to take up slack I think. there is a similar idler for the PS belt it is there so you can get the tension on the air pump belt and the alt/ps belt the same.....don't go too tight, but there is not much deflection on a tight belt, maybe 1/2 to 3/4" at the widest span...HTH

I would guess that you first need to loosen the larger 17?mm nut on the face of the pulley before you can move the adjuster from below to tension the belt. John

There are three nuts/bolts that need to be attended to...

The pivot bolt...the A/C, or Alternator, or Smog Pump, or whatever sits above this bolt. You loosen it first, and tighten it last. It's what holds the accessory onto the bracket. It's often a 17mm.

The tension bolt. This is a 12mm bolt. It's got a long threaded section. You use this to adjust the belt tension. That's it's only function.

The tension fixing bolt. This is a 12 or 14mm bolt, not sure. This is on one end of the tension bolt. You must loosen this in order to adjust the belt tension (as you must also loosen the pivot bolt). Once it's loose, then you can adjust the belt tension.

Look carefully, it will make sense.

Don't make the belts too tight...make them tight enough not to squeal, not no tighter. Too tight and the accessory bearings will fail prematurely.

The a/c belt may be slightly too long to get a correct adjustment.

I bought a NAPA belt listed for my 1990 Fj62, only to find that the belt was slightly longer than could be adjusted with the idler pulley. snug but squeeled...

Ordered a Toyota belt and the idler now adjusts up tight at about half the pully slot...

I think NAPA and others use a generic part number based on aproximate belt length for many applications....
That said, the Alternator and P/Steering belt were fine from them.
Search here on mud for more info.

You can always take the A/C belt back to Napa and tell them you need one an inch or two longer. Then you have a trail spare. John

Thanks all. Sorry I've been away for a few days and couldn't respond.
I figured that the idler pulley was the tightening mechanism for the a/c belt so I loosened it, which freed up the adjustment bolt (accessed from underneath with a long extension) but moving the adjustment bolt didn't change the belt tension either way. Is there something I'm missing? It doesn't look like the a/c compressor pivots.
The belt thing is interesting. I could try that but with the lack of room in there I'd hate to get all the other belts off to get to the a/c belt and it not be the problem. Heck I don't see a way to tighten any of them but to be fair I've only closely checked on the a/c belt.
