Need help & ideas on shipping an FJ60 frame from Los Angeles, CA to Morgantown, WV !!

Ok let's have any and all ideas.

It was all set with Forward Air but they bailed when the frame was delivered to their depot at LAX (Los Angeles Airport). Main complaint was that it wasn't crated.

How about strapping pallets top and bottom ?

Anybody shipped a frame and have similar experience and/or solution ?

Know of any consolidated shippers which are recommended for shipping truck frames ?

Thanks in advance !

Rent a Uhaul and I will load it and drive it out for a few bucks.

WOW !

Very nice offer but hold that thought for a second or two. It would be at least 2,000 miles, 4 day/nights on the road and lodging, return airline ticket, fuel @ over $3 bucks per gallon ...

Not ruling it out and thanks bunches for the offering but lets give it a bit of time to percolate and see what other options post up.

I've driven coast to coast 9-10 times in the last 10 years- Daytona Beach to San Diego. 3 days no problem - Camping is the way to go= free. I am an airline pilot (laid off but still have passes) = almost free. Gas is not cheap- wouldn't even guess what it would cost. I live in North Carolina. I am looking to go out to Joshua Tree in late October. When are you looking to get it out here and what does the shipping company want to ship it for.

This might work ...

The original quote from Forward Air was about one month ago before Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and fuel prices went through the roof.

The original *estimate* (because they don't give binding quotes) was for 800 lbs. 200 inches long by 65 inches wide by 24 inches tall. Sure no problem we'll take it. No need to crate it or wrap it or nothing. Deliver it to the LAX depot and pick it up at the closest depot to Morgantown, WV. Guestimate was $285 and money order with drop off of frame.

Seems they were lo-balling me a bit. Maybe lo-balling me a *lot*.

Now it needs to be crated and the guestimate has gone up to ~ $650 if we can convice them to take it.

Oh well, we'll figure this out somehow. Fortitude will prevail.

Target was to have the frame and start the project mid-October. That time line is adjustable. Would like to have the truck re-framed and done by December. That's when I'll be putting away my summer truck and driving the winter(re-framed) truck exclusively.

You have no idea how bad salt is to the undersides of our turcks. Before last winter I did some major suspension modification and *everything* had a good coat of one stage paint on it. The winter salt torn off all that paint and it's like I didn't even paint at all.

Joshua Tree ... hmmm ... nice. Have a couple of friends who are climbers that I hear mumbling about that place. Sounds nice. Me ? Avid whitewater kayaker, mountain biker, and back country skier in the winter time ... hence serious 4x4 truck.

Let's see what develops ! Maybe U-Hauling is the way to go !

It doesn't weigh 800 pounds. More like 500-600.

I and a friend lifted it together, him at one end ane me at the other. We walked it about 75 feet from the delivery truck to the garage without dropping it or having to stop for rest. We did need gloves to keep it from cutting into our hands, but that was the most we worried about.

I'm physically stronger than he is, but I'm no body builder. So I think the weight estimate is high, IMHO.

If you want me to get precise measurements, I can. I still have the frame off and sitting on blocks.

Just curious as to why you are taking a frame to Motown. I live here and don't see too much other Cruiser action. Let me know if you need any help with anything once the frame gets here.

Forward Air calculated dimensional weight. So the dimensions I gave them come out to ~ 1200 lbs.

If we go with a consolidator the exact weight will be more critical. Much thanks for posting up !

Fred,

That would be great. Not super acurate needed but just a good double check on the measurements.

500 - 600 lbs.
200 inches long by 65 inches wide by 24 inches tall

Much thanks in advance,

Getto,

Will do !!!

My mechanic is in Bruceton Mills, WV. He owns/operates CJ's Automotive. Heck of a nice guy and probably the best darn mechanic/machinist I've ever come across. He use to buy and do complete frame off restores of muscle cars a bunch of years ago. He also ran a trans rebuilding shop where *he* was the primary builder, a engine rebuilding shop, and a general auto maintenance shop too, all at teh same time. Incredibly experienced. Somewhat retired now from the big business ventures and has a shop to keep him entertained like a hobby. His three bay auto shop is literally out in the middle of nowhere in a farmers field.

No problem, I've got a few things to take care of today, but I'll be out in the shop tonight so I'll take a tape to it and let you know.

Here you go.

To elevation is freehand. I'm not very good at drawing by hand anymore, too used to CAD. :)

Like I said, weight is probably 600 pounds tops. 2 people can carry it pretty easily, so unless I and my friend are stronger than we give ourselves credit for, I'd guess it's in the neighborhood of 500-600 lbs.

I had a big panel saw, like the ones you see at home depot. this motha' must weigh at least 500 lbs, and i got it shipped from washington state to new jersey via common carrier, i think ABF, last spring for around 270 bucks. bolted on an eight-foot pallet , standing up.
