siding really depends on what is entailed... is removing old siding necessary, how many windows, how many gable ends, how high are the walls, etc...
If there are lots of windows, some material will be wasted, more time to make more cuts, same with gable ends...and if said contractor will be working off of scaffolding, then again, more time.....
around here good rule of thumb is about 2x the cost of the materials... but it all depends.

I have Ceder Shake siding. They cost around $100 per square.

Don't ask me why. I am a painting contractor, and you would think I would have gone with 0 maintenance siding, but no I have 8" reveal cedar siding that I must twp(natural cedartone) every 3-4 yrs.

The cost is about $2.86/sq. ft. depending on the reveal.

Are you planning to stain the siding? If not, have you considered the cement-based options? When I built my garage, the material cost was about 20% of cedar siding. Labor should be a wash.

i was thinking ie: wife wants to paint the siding

how is that stuff?

If you are going to paint it, do not get ceder.

would like to go with something that matches the good wood on the rest of the house...not replacing the whole thing...the PO put masonite clapboards on some areas that are like spunges now in a few spots...they were only put on 10 years ago...so...hope there isnt too much of a problem underneath.

Here's what I used: http://www.jameshardie.com/

As easy to work with as cedar, IMO. I used pre-primed pieces with a 5" reveal to nearly match the horizontal lines of our brick house. I sided our 24 x 36 garage by myself. If you decide to go this way, get a set of brackets which act as a set of hands to hold the planks in position while you nail them. Can't find them quickly, but any of the home improvement stores should have them. I nailed them using 6 C nails (Cad plated, IIRC) with my framing nailer - by hand doesn't work. You'll also need a diamond blade to cut it with your skil saw.

HTH.

edit: The brackets are designed to hold the plank with the standard 1 1/4" lap, so they work with any reveal you want.

got my first estimate...turns out...most contractors will not just replace sections of masonite...because it is crap...I have been getting quotes for siding all the masonited areas

does $12,000 for 1200 sqft sound high / low ?? about right

preprimed cedar better? is it primed on the backside as well?

That's $100 a square. Sounds about right.

Preprimed is primed on the back as well and is better than the raw cedar.
