Hi,

I was at U-Haul today, planning to drive a trailer from SF to Portland. They tried selling me a transmission cooler:
1. I don't know if my truck has one already; where could I look?
2. Is this cooler necessary?

Thanks,
Matthew

The OEM cooler is part of the radiator, I have heard that some people over here in the UK that tow caravans add a additional cooler, but they do not remove the existing setup as that aids with heating up the fluid to temp. I can't comment on how effective it is or if is needed but I know they do get it installed due to towing to protect the transmission. Personally I wouldn't bother for one trip, but I have no experience in this.

I believe we all already have them. It's a small radiator looking thing, sits on the driver's half in front of the A/C heat exchanger and engine radiator. It's maybe 12"x12".

Maybe if you do heavy towing in difficult conditions, people increase capacity?

^^^ Yes, that is a huge transmission cooler came form the factory. It is about 12 inches by 10 inches or so. Should be next to the driver's side head lamp in front of the AC condenser. Before you haul things, make sure to clean the transcooler fins, Remove any dirt/bugs etc, Apply dome water and brush those off. Be careful with the fins on the cooler. Those can bend if you you too much force.
