that's funny, I replied to your post on Ih8 mud.
Vern and I are my rebuilding my 2F right now ( I have the brown 60 there) He also has a blue 60 there getting a engine rebuild
Vern may seem 'quirky' but believe me, he does not rip people off or reccomend work that does not need to be done. His prices may be a bit higher primarly because we will only use OEM Toyota parts for most everything (trust me, I know, they can get very expensive)
The machine shop he uses does a very good job. I had my block bored 40 over, the crank polished, the head decked and valves done, along with everything hot-tanked.
My engine had about 225k miles on it when the HG blew (I was with Vern out in Eastern AZ) When Vern took the engine apart, he said that the #5 piston rings we also about gone
This is why I say with about 200k miles, it is getting close to a rebuild. You may just be able to get away with the head job, hone the cylinder, re-ring the pistons and install new bearings
The labor costs are a big part of the job. But you also have to decide how long you're gonna keep it. I'm planning on keeping mine till the wheels fall off or it rolls down a cliff, whichever comes first. If you're not planning on keeping it long, and top end job may well be the way to go.
Oh, and that blue 60 he is rebuilding the engine on, appearently it appears to be an aftermarket rebuild. I got to see first hand some of the inferior quality of things like after market head gaskets. OEM is the way to go.....
