Need a little welding help

Hey fellas,

Anybody with a welder in the Triangle area got a free evening to help me out w/ a little welding? I've got some diff armor that needs to be welded on before GSMTR. I keep swearing that I'm just gonna buy a welder one day, get some scrap metal and just teach myself how to weld, but I haven't gotten around to wiring the garage for 220 and convincing the wife that we "need" a welder.

Just a thought for ya, ReadyWelder MIG is a nice / portable setup and requires no re-wiring of the garage! You use car batteries as your power source and so when on the trail you have a welder you take along as well.

In the garage, for most small tasks it is fine, I would not really want to do a whole buggy with it but you could.

The one I picked up has an attachment that does allow me to use a DC power source so I ended up buying a ac/dc stick welder later on and so now at home I have a MIG gun with the ac/dc as my power.

You can use the fluxcore (no gas, more splatter, less clean) or you can hook up a gas bottle to it too.

There is a guy here in the state that is a dealer and fellow wheeler, that is where i got mine. ($425ish for the model 10000adp which includes the dc adapter)

No problem and thanks for the idea! How long can you weld w/ 2 batteries hooked up to it? Welders pull a lot of juice, so I would think that the batteries wouldn't last very long without being recharged, would they?

I could weld something for you. I'm no pro, but I can make 2 pieces of metal stick together pretty good

Thanks for the offer Ramon, but I've already got an offer to do the welding. The best part is that the guy (Steve) lives about 1/2 mile from me!

No idea really, I think I have heard you can get an hour of welding or so out of two batteries, but never needed that kind of time.

If you think about this this way, most welding takes place in spurts, and most plug in welders have say a 25-50% duty cycle. So with 50% you can weld 30 minutes out of an hour. Battery welding is 100% duty cycle so if you can weld 60 minutes with it, that is the equiv of 2 hours on a plug in.

To be honest, if you "weld" more than 15 minutes at one sitting, that is a LOT of metal you have just stuck together!! (Someone on here with more welding exp can tell us how many inches per minute you would normally weld)

Combine this with a good battery charger to charge up those batteries and you are in good shape for nearly anything except a really huge project like building a buggy.

Welding on that plate for example, I am guessing under 5 minutes of actual welding, lots more time for grinding, cleaning, etc. Anyway, just a thought of something that has worked out really well for me without putting in 220. (My dads shop has 220, that is where our 220 ac/dc stick welder is at)
