After 20 years on the outside looking in, I finally got an '01 LC. It is an awesome machine, and watching the gas gauge drop is really entertaining.

I am in the Raleigh/Cary area in North Carolina, can anybody make recommendations about where I can go for service?

An individual in VA who inspected it said Toyota mandates synthetic ATF in their newer trucks, but I haven't seen it anywhere else. Not trying to start a big synthetic vs. fossil debate.

Welcome!

never heard of it being mandated...

The synthetic comment probably refers to the fact that you must use Toyota WS (world standard) ATF for '04+ vehicles. Change interval is 100K mi, though. Before that, it was either Dextron II/III or Type-IV, whereby you can use various off-the-shelf brands.

The 2001 uses Dextron II/III ATF. I prefer the synthetic. I have used Mobil 1 and the Redline D4ATF (currently). The mineral oil works OK, just change it out as required.

I've had my '99 LC serviced exclusively by Phil's Toystore in Cary the past three years i've owned it. I've been able to negotiate most pricing on the major services (ie timing belt, water pump etc), but I don't mind paying for 'peace of mind' for someone who knows the difference between a 'Cruiser, Rover or Suburban for that matter. Last visit, I looked in on the garage and saw a sweet 40 trail rig getting some work done- I inquired and Wayne tells me they're experienced with mods. Hmm...time to get another cruiser for the wife so I can get busy on the '99.
