Is anyone going to take up the challenge of replacing the factory nav unit? I saw that the last project to do this failed. Is there any hope left?
I may be misunderstanding the object of the replacement here, but is it possible to retrofit something in place of the 03-up nav screen, since it incorporates, HVAC, radio, etc.? Even if it IS hard wired? To be clear that was to develop a reasonably priced plug n play harness. If you are willing to hardwire you can swap it out. As time permits I will transcribe my notes so an owner can review for help in doing it.
2001-2002 parts: ac amplifier, dash bezel with display and button covers etc, radio brackets ~ $1200 new
2003-2007 parts are similar at about $2200 new
Obviously you can source used.
My research indicates all of the necessary connectivity exists in the Nav equipped 2003+ to make the swap to non-nav
One component of the non-nav 2003+ is the eyebrow display (time/temp) that is not available through parts channels.
Lets be clear. You are removing the mfd and replacing with non-nav hvac amplifier, dash bezel and associated brackets. Moreover you are then pulling wires from various connectors and inserting into service connectors for non-nav trucks. In a sense cross connecting.
This has not been tested only reviewed.
Alternatively you could buy the non-nav dash harness for a couple grand.
