So there is plenty of tech on tire width, not so much on wheels. So all other variables removed, how does changing width (narrower or wider) effect things?

My question stems from wanting to go to a lower offset wheel with the same size tire, however all aftermarket wheels are wider than stock.

A wider wheel will give you a more square tire which should give you a slightly larger contact patch but exposes your wheel rim to potential damage from trail obstacles or curbs. I think its also easier to pop a bead if aired down. A narrow wheel will give you a bulged sidewall which offers more rim protection, will help hold a bead when aired down but gives a slightly smaller contact patch. Changing your offset or back spacing with a narrower wheel could allow the tire to rub on stuff.
