Hi All, you have been really helpful to me before, so I'm looking for some more help in the hopes of keeping my 89 FJ62 with 210k miles rolling along as my daily driver!

When rolling at speeds between say 15 and 35, perhaps higher but it's tough to hear, i get a noise that sounds like just tires (i run 31 BFG mud terrains, on stock rims) rumbling. But...if feels like i can make the noise start and stop by rolling at a certain speed in that range, and it sounds like waaah waaaah waaaaah like the noise a bowl or cup makes as it's spinning faster and faster before settling down onto a table. Don't think it's in the tranny as i get the noise in gear and out of gear. I've had my bearings and front end rebuilt, though about 50k miles ago - could that be it? What should i check? ---Thanks. Jeff, 89 White FJ62, 210k miles, OME med. susp, hi-flo exhaust, cold air intake (and a car seat in back!)...Washington DC.

Is the rig pulling? Is there a lot of play in the steering wheel? How are the tires...are they wearing evenly? Whats the tire pressure at? What tires do you have...are they MT's?
I hear some of the big lifted ass full size trucks make this same noise while barreling down the highway.

Does it make the noise during acceleration, deceleration or is it constant. I had a bad differential that made a little noise while on the gas, more when off the gas, but it would go away when in the middle. Sounded just like mud tires.

doesn't make noise during accel or decel, it makes it all the time, not just at those times. it could be tires (running stock rims and 30 or 31 mud terrains (BFG).

I had a vibration during acceleration, a low rumbing and I had over 200,000 miles. When I took the t-case apart I noticed sharp splines on the A440F output shaft as well as the output gear that was on the shaft. Just some food for thought.

I'm thinking wear on the transfer case idler gear, if nothing else turns it up. Had this on an old 62 I had with about 165k on it at the time. Vibration/shudder, just at one speed, on my truck it was 45 to 55 mph. Replace it, and you'll have a $200 dollar door stop :)
