So my new to me bj74's t case makes a noise which at first listen sounds alot like when you lug the 13bt kind of a growl. upon closer investigation it is the sound of gears not properly meshing. This only happens in 4wheel drive and generally at speed like 3rd gear and higher and ONLY when there is no load. So no noise when under acceleration or deceleration, just when ever it's unloaded at speed. I noticed when engaging 4 wheel drive that it makes the same gear noise for a split second - is it possible that the engaugement mechanism is out of adjustment or worn ? The previous owner said he payed a large sum of cash to have EBI rebuild the t case so Im hoping for an easy fix ???

You better not lug the 13B-T it will bite you.

Have you checked the oil levels in the Transfer case and the transmission . Are they both up to the filler.

Have you physically grabbed the front driveshaft and spun it around by hand to see if you have any stiff areas like your U-Joints

Have you grabbed the front driveshaft and checked to see if your front output bearings on the tranfercase have very little play.

I have had this noise when I was up in the NWT it was the U-Joint closest to the tranfer-case .

It is difficult to trouble shoot things over the I-Net

Does it make the same noise in Low Range but a bit quieter ?

Are the splines on the front driveshaft well greased? It also needs to have the cap on the end of the shaft so the grease can work its way up the full length of the splines.

thanks I will crack out the grease gun and check those things. I don't intentionally lug the 13bt but the step from 3rd to 4th gets me a lot

You are not driving this on the road in 4x4 gear are you?

I was going to reply with something smart ass but that would be unfair :). Yes I'm using 4 wheel on the road - it's the only thing that can keep me on the road and up the hills to my house ....................... yes SNOW. Just this morning I swapped ends past 90 degrees to where I was going - and within 1 inch of the ditch - pucker factor 8 1/2 on a 10 scale. Using 4 wheel at higher speeds is what brought up the noise - going slow you don't notice it.

Just wanted to make sure. Some people buy older part time 4wds and think they can be driven on solid surfaces like AWD
