So, time to make plans. :hhmm: I'm thinking a heavy OME 2 1/2" lift, 4.88 gears and 35" tires. It will take a long time to put together. I like the clearance provided by the taller tires but I really don't want to get any higher than I need to accommodate the tires. I need to be able to handle heavy loads. Last year it seemed like I made it to Sourdough fairly easy even though I did smack several times very hard on rocks. This year it seemed to me I was riding lower for some reason and it became evident almost immediately when I seemed to be smacking rocks everywhere. I had to be super careful where I placed my tires and we were still dragging way too much. My guess is, and Tony seemed to think that I had at least one leaf already cracked when I started. All it took was the right rock on that lower shock mount and it was all over. I need your advise on what you would use and also importantly, where to get it w/o paying a fortune on shipping.

I now know what it takes to mend broken leaf springs, that my jacks and tools need to be more accessible and my wife and kids are owed some fun. :)

Sounds like a plan, but I would regear at the very last or not even at all.

That all sounds good to me too. I would start with the lift (because you need it!), and start saving for the gears. 35" tires can be had cheap on CL, so don't worry about those yet. Also, make sure you don't want to put a locker in when you regear. You are going to be in there, so that would be the time to do it. GL my friend!

I believe he already has a aussie in the rear. but yes.

Yes, Aussie in the rear. Are they ratio exclusive?? If I change gears will I need to replace that locker??

Chris

Go here for lots of info The Wagon Way I wheeled my 62 hard before I got the diesel.

Just call everywhere before you order the spring package.

Regear on a 62 with large tires is pretty much mandatory if you dont want to kill the auto tranny. If you think your wagon is a pig now, taller tires will make it worse. I was running 4.88s with 33's and this actually puts the rig back to stock specs torque converter locks up properly, plenty of highway power and I actually gained a 1/2 mpg because things are once again working as designed. I would not put 35's on a 62 without a gear change

And 35's will have clearance issues with only a 2.5 lift. Some fender trimming will be needed

You might think about 33's but still with the gear change. I ran Rubicon on 33's and didn't scratch a brand new skidplate. Just depends on how hard you plan to wheel the rig. 35's also put a lot more leverage on axle parts, especially birfs

And glad to hear you made it home safely!

Tony

Thank you Tony for the advice and helping me get home OK. I will do a lot of reading before I purchase the spring package. I've already hawked some things and I'm about half way there money wise. Someday I'll get your shackle back to you! Chris.:)

Story of my life......

Save a few hundred dollars and start shopping for lift kits-BOOM- somebody is sick or out of insulin! Or something else always! I've got to build up some room on a credit card or two and just roll the dice for the whole thing at once because I can tell there's just no other way. Anybody out there recently "spring" for an OME kit?? If so where did you get your's and how did it work out for you?? My plan is to pick up what I need and then contract with a club member or the club as a whole to get it installed. I'd rather enrich the club treasury or a club member directly if they're interested in doing the work. I was also recommended to go talk with the people over at Bergman's over on Vilas road on what they'd charge to do the work. Maybe they get wholesale rates on the OME kits and can cut me a deal. Anyone in the club know Bergman's at all??:meh:

When I do this I also want to flip the u-bolts. I believe I saw a link in the 60 tech section about a kit for that.

theres no reason you cant buy piece by piece and save some pain.
time wise it turns into a wash, probably shorter, doing it that way.
waiting to save 2k or whatever for an off the shelf can kill a guy.

your best deal is going to be somewhere you dont have to eat shipping.
use google to price shop then check with wheelers offroad in gp.

skip bergmans

Thanks Aric. I think you know what I'm talkin' about. Waiting to get it all at once is a pipe dream. Right now I'd just be happy finding a couple leaves to get it back on the road including a shock. I rarely drive it because it still is held together by Tonies twin shackle and duct tape repair job. Anybody got a set of stock leaves or singles that we could repair it with temporarily?? Maybe something can be done at the wrenching party? :meh:

Chris

Flip kits are made by Dave Gore in AZ. His business is 4+ (mostly sold through Man a Fre) He goes by LCwizard here on Mud.

His flip kits are a great product had mine for years now and they are a great add on, even more so than the lift kit.

If you want to get the rig running again soon, Specter Off Road does sell used stuff, probably get a stock spring fairly cheap.

I never did hear, did you drive all the way to Grants Pass with that patch job I put on the spring?

Hell Tony, I'm still driving it back and forth to work about once a week! It's still solid as when you fixed it up. I just check the winch cable tension occasionally so it doesn't start to "disassemble" !!

I'd take anything you can spare Kief. Aren't the 40 and 62 stacks about the same?? Are you going to be coming to town for the wrenching party? Or at all? If not maybe I can just come over on my way to Wonder some day. Thanks.
