Hey Nik,

Is that new glass?

No the glass came out of a 1971 parts vehicle I picked up when I bought this one. The parts vehicle had glass so it paid for itself.

Window molding was a score from 5-6 years ago when I bought the entire Slocruiser's weatherstripping kit. My wife is now glad the weatherstripping box is no longer in her closet.

I didn't do anything special to the glass, I was just lucky when my parts vehicle had a pristine windshield.

Guess what happens when the transfer case isn't in neutral!

It moves. (And proves I was a dumb ass yesterday)

Didn't work on it today. I filled it with gas and went for a few short break-in rides. I had to take my 82 year-old father-in-law for a ride! He's been watching the build for years. It was special.

Next up, rock sliders or running boards. Nobody can get in/out without a ladder.

Man not sure how I missed this build but that’s one sweet pig. Just plain impressive and good looking rig. Love that paint color combo.

One of the things I noticed when driving around yesterday was the whine from the transfer case. I have the original 3-speed case, it was rebuilt and I have no idea what it sounded like prior to my build. Is this just an issue based on technology available 50 years ago or is there a suggestion for reducing the whine?

I plan to swap oil out after a short period of time since it was rebuilt so I can see if there are any issues and I was going to experiment with other oils.

Suggestions?

I’m a fan of redline synthetic in these manual transmissions and transfer cases. I think they shift better but it could admittedly be my imagination. Not sure it would help with the noise.

I'm using Redline in both of mine and have very loud whine due to the new 4:1 low gear which are straight cut gears. I haven't noticed much if any reduction in whine with the Redline, but feel better it's in there.

Hey Nik,

Now that you're at the finish line, what's your plans, dreams for the wagon? You going to travel with it, camp, coffee getter, etc. ?

It's probably a coffee getter. I'm transitioning to retirement in Durango Colorado over the next 16-18 months. Just a hobby vehicle as my body doesn't enjoy camping without the amenities of a Tempurpedic mattress. (3 back surgeries)
It'll make the run to town and maybe a few runs from Ouray to Telluride if I need more room than the FJ40.

As long as the heat here in Oklahoma doesn't get too out of control, it will get me to the hardware store or the local breweries. It was funny last night because I asked my wife about parking the 55 in the third stall so I could more easily get it out to drive. Currently, the stall has my son's little BMW 128i that she drives infrequently since my son is in college and likely won't take the car to Boston.

Her response was "I won't be able to get the BMW out and you're really going to drive that thing?" Obviously she doesn't see the attraction we see.

I have a three car garage that fits my 2006 LC100 and my wife’s Lexus 450H and...nothing. My wife made me rent a garage to store my 1969 FJ55 offsite. Consider yourself lucky! She is going with me to HIH in Silverton, CO this July so there is that.

Cruise control was mentioned in another thread so I got curious. For me I think it will be easy since I'm drive by wire. I have three wires under the hood coming from the throttle controller (TAC) that need to go to three wires on my GM column. Then apply +12v to one wire on the column. I already have the brake switch wire hooked up (I think). Then verify. I'm not sure if I'll get to it this weekend but at least it looks possible.
