...And by side exhaust I mean my exhaust system has a big hole just before the first cat.

So it looks like I'm going to need a new Y-pipe. I've actually been thinking about getting a new system since the current one on the truck looks like the current deck railing on the Titanic. The Toyota exhaust is out, I saw the price and I felt that the OEM Toyota exhaust shouldn't cost more than a set of new aluminum heads for a race motor. I've check around on Mud and a lot of people seem to like the Bosal exhaust. But I did want to ask about exhaust shops in town.

So...anybody had any luck with exhaust shops in town? Any thoughts on a replacement system?

the exhaust is stainless, it should last, i'd just replace what needs replaced, and roll on.

R&J Mechanical & Welding Service in apex is a great shop also.

Green Hell,

I wish I could help but I'm in the exact same situation. Y pipe is shot. Cats are on their last leg. A local shop said I'd probably need to replace everything. Toyota parts are outrageous.

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread but I have some similar questions.

Any recommendations on a good shop in Winston Salem?

Any recommendations on a bolt-on stock-ish replacement that might improve performance? (in other words, no re-routing...)

For dead stock replacement, is Bosal pretty good? (the prices on partsgeek.com seem decent...)

If you want to go to Uwharie much and you're touching the exhaust near the cats it's a good time to look into rerouting so the pipe doesn't go under the frame rail.

X2 for Henry's. I have been going to Henry for about 12-14 years now. The do great work at a good price. They do not do mandrel bends so I would not take a show car there or something high performance, but for 95% of everything else Henry's the place. You cannot go wrong with him. Just do not wait on your LC. Its much better to drop it off for the day.

I was going to say exactly this. Alex, take your truck to Henry's and tell them where you want it ran and that's where they'll put it. I've used henry's as well and they are awesome.

X3, Donnie (the manager) did mine, showed him where I wanted it routed and he did exactly as I asked. Magnaflow cat and muffler...

As for y pipes I'd be tempted to go with the new magnaflow unit. Gone up in price recently but avail for around 335. Then if you want to order bosal front and back half separately with a coupon you can get the whole setup for under 500.

Reviews on bosal has been mixed. Seems their hangars leave something to be desired

@jtmosca

Walts exhaust and ac in Lexington had done a few for members. Heard he put new cats on an 80 this week actually.

Price is great. Quality was pretty good. I asked for a tricky placement and he did ok at it but some welds never made it all the way around the pipe. Think he may perform better at a stock replacement.

Thanks for the info!

I've had good luck with Henry's in Raleigh, a lot of people have but some haven't. They were able to tuck my exhaust over my frame rail with the 1" body lift. I should have asked them to tuck my catalytic converter too but forgot. I've been eye balling some CX Racing headers from fleabay for a hair under $500 but I can wait.

Thanks for all the info guys!

I like the idea of rerouting now while the exhaust is getting redone.

Here is what I asked Henry's to do for my FZJ80...

Jerry I'm stealing these shots for reference. Have you had any sensor reading problems with just the one cat?

Not sure. I've had one in the past, seems to show up right before I need to get it inspected. I did have a cracked weld before I asked for this re-routing (same cat) I've not had it happen since last year, seems like when it sits for an extended period (I don't daily drive it, can sit for months when I'm commutiing on the motorcycle), makes me think its bad gas. I clear it and I don't have any issues while I drive it during the summer.

Yet, I don't ever check the code, just clear by disconnecting battery and go on.

We can fix all that Jerry

Kind of hard to tell from the pictures but, do you have a body lift? Looks good.

For those of you near Winston Salem and Lexington area:

I took your advice and went to Walt's Exhaust and AC in Lexington for the exhaust replacement and re-route. They ended up re-welding the y-pipe, replacing both cats, re-routing the pipe over the frame, replacing my old muffler with a new Magnaflow, and keeping the old tailpipe. When I asked about switching to just one cat, they said that a recent client ran into some inspection issues so now they have the policy of installing 2 cats if the vehicle originally came with 2 cats to avoid any future problems. In my very-amateur opinion I thought some of the welds were a little sloppy visually but overall the LC runs and sounds great and I'm pretty happy to have it all fixed. They charged me approx $550. Below are some pictures:
