Rescued a mutt a few months ago from the Atlanta Humane Society, and she's a great puppy, lots of energy, but you can see what a sweet dog she will grow up to be. Takes training quite well and great with the kids.

There's just one problem... she eats poop. Her own, my other dog's, random wildlife's... I clean up as much as I can, but she still finds "snacks" and goes to town -- coming into the house with a s***-eating grin...

I'm sure there a lot of dog owners out there... how the heck do I make her stop? Tried the pills, didn't work... thinking about using a watered down ammonia solution to spray on poop in the yard to condition her away from it.

The big question is...

Do you let her "kiss" you?

cause then you're eating poop too..

A great point... no I do not let her kiss me, but you know how dogs are, if they can sneak in a lick -- they will...

Worst yet is that the kids are closer to her level, so they sometimes get a lick in the face... GROSS. Need to fix this problem... this by far trumps my 60s dead #4 cylinder and fuel cutoff issues...

puppies do this

I have no idea why and my dog did it to. I would HIGHLY suggest you have him on leash at all times and even a muzzle. Its very possible he can pick up e-coli bacteria. My dog picked up three forms of e-coli which did not make him really sick, but it infected his bladder.

We spent $10,000 dollars over three years of trying to rid of it, 2 of the 3 forms of e-coli have been removed. He will for ever have the last drug resistant ecoli in his bladder and will be on permanent medication.

You can't stop her... you can only hope to contain her.

In all seriousness, don't think this is fixable. I've had two golden retrievers that were coprophages ($hit eaters). Tried every trick under the sun and nothing worked. Just have to take 'em for what they are. Keep the yard as clean as you can.

I never had a dog that did that. I just pick it up everyday. They liked horse poop tho

Maybe you should try better dog food and some vitamins.

She eats super-premium stuff - Venison and Sweet Potato from Natural Balance. Who knows, maybe the good stuff makes it worse? I'm contemplating adding a canine multivitamin also. Good suggestion.

My wife has a s*** eater, thank god he's not a face licker! We were told by the vet to put meat tenderizer on his food to keep him from eating his turds. Worked for about two weeks, he must have acquired a taste for it.

Since your pup eats other animal poop, I guess you'll have to stay as vigilant as possible on poop patrol and hope she grows out of it. Good luck!

That's really the biggest problem. I travel almost every week for several days. I have a stay at home wife with two young kids (2 and 4), two dogs, and a busy community schedule. The good thing is the dogs don't stay crated up all day. Bad thing is that my wife has to draw the line somewhere, and she can't get away to clean poop up immediately after they eliminate. Usually by the time I get back, certain piles have been picked over by the pup... She seems picky about which ones she'll eat though. I didn't know there was yummy poop and non-yummy poop.... :bang:

FWIW, I would say Blue Buffalo is the best dog food. We feed our Lab-mix the Wilderness line from BB. It's 100% Grain free, and from what I understand is way better for dogs. I have heard all other dog food described as "fast food for dogs" when compared. However I do not know if this will help, but worth a shot.

A friend of my wife's family has a dog that did that... I guess it's some kinda disorder and can actually be treated. Her dog is the cutest thing... but ate it's own poop like it was candy and had long fur around it's mouth.... yikes. They took it to the vet and now it gets pills or vitamins or something that makes it not want to eat it's poop anymore.

Don't feel too bad. I've had a couple of retarded dogs aswell. Loved them both; but they were retarded.

She will grow out of it, ours did. May take a couple of years but eventually they stop and graduate to butt sniffing, etc.

Congrats on the new pup. And about the poo, I thought all dogs ate it? Mine did but then stopped after turning 6 months old or so
