My brother got in a wreck......damage report added

So, I was supposed to take over the cruiser tomorrow. :tear: :whoops:

Picture018.jpg

More pics to come later. He got hit by a late model S-10 blazer. It was a glancing blow. He says it's still completely driveable, but then he said the steering wheel is crooked when the wheels are straight ahead, so that has me concerned. I'll be home tomorrow and will inspect it myself.

The driver of the Blazer admitted fault and is insured, so it will be fixed. I'm thinking I won't have them replace the running boards, but instead will put the money towards sliders :D Any other mods you can think of while they're fixing it?

Sorry to hear of your troubles...

Seems to me, you were explaining to us how your brother was not the brightest bulb when it came to taking care of a vehicle... I guess this only proves the point.

Hope you/he has insurance.

Actually, he's a good kid, just not very mechanically minded. In this case, it wasn't his doing in the least. He was sitting at a stop light waiting for the green light, and the lady that hit him got rearended by an Isuzu box truck, pushing her into him. Oh well, as they say, sh!t happens.

I know how that is. A very similar situation has happened to my son twice (so he has told me).

None the less, I'm still sorry your truck got beat on. Looks like the front fender and both doors.

I have a devious mind :D I was thinking, since I have to replace that running board anyway, I might as well get sliders. Now I've been thinking that since they're doing body work and painting probably that whole side of the truck, it wouldn't be much more to have them paint the roof. Maybe I should remove the roof rack and rubber strips and have them weld the holes shut and paint the roof too while they're at it. Hmmm, any other ideas from you guys?

BTW, what is the reasoning behind removing the factory rack, aside from looks and stopping leaks? Anything? Thanks

Damn dude!

Sounds like a guy I used to know! :D

Seriously though Ary, you're better off driving the bashed up 80 than the XJ!

Not sure how the insurance company will deal with the steps. They would probably replace that one, which I'm sure isn't terribly cheap, but usually it's not as easy and telling them you want that money because you're putting something on yourself. If you wanted all the money and would fix it yourself, then usually a insurance company will do that. So you'd get a quote of how much to fix it all, they would give you a check, then you go back to that shop (or another one) tell them to just fix the body and not the step. So you're the middle-man in the dealing is about the only way you will actually end up with the money. Which is perfectly fine and legal by the way, but you would want to settle with the insurance company instead of just taking the truck to a shop and having the shop bill the other guy's insurance, if you did that I don't think you would have any hope of seeing any of the money yourself.

Good Luck...

it is to deal with the rust around the holes and also the overall factory rack "shortcomings"

you can maybe talk the insurance company into an allowance of equal value for sliders. my brother got an an arb instead of a factory front bumper that way.

I guess I should have explained that this isn't my first dealing with Insurance companies. I've been in 3 accidents personally(one bad, two fender benders) and know all about how the settlement goes. If there is a lein on the vehicle the leinholder typically makes you put it back the way it was. However, we own the truck, so we can take the check and do with it what we please. So yeah, I'm planning to get a check and take it to a body shop. I just have to make sure there's nothing else wrong besides the body before I settle. Would hate to figure out the front trackbar is bent or something after I've settled.

Oh yeah, one of the fender benders I was in, resulted in my getting my bullbar for my Jeep.

Basicly it is a rust breeding POS and the people that designed it need to have their wankers wacked.............

Why fix it? Use the money for a lift, lockers etc... You're gonna scratch it anyway!!!

'cause it already has lockers, I don't want a lift right now(planning on 285s for now), and I already have a budget set aside in the bank for mods.

My last rig I beat to hell, and I really regret it. This one I'm gonna keep nice as best I can as long as I can. Once I'm done with school I'll get wild with it, but now it needs to be a respectable DD that is a great weekend escape vehicle as well.

Abrya,
you do not have to settle with the insurance company off the bat. let them write their estimate and then take it to the shop of your choice. how you go about fixing hte vihicle is you business not the insurance companies. you could take it to the shop and advise them you would liket o get the roof done at the same time but do not want the running boards. the running boards should be a credit to you with them to be used towards the roof repairs. I doubt it will be enough but I am not sure on the cost of the running boards.
If you take it to a shop worth their weight in s*** they will know if there is any additional damage to the vehicle they can call the insurance company and have them pay for any additional RELATED damage to the vehicle. It is really not a big deal adn with most estimates over 2k you cna pretty well bet there will be more damage and supplemental payment.
FWIW this is my opinion only but I also used to work for an insurance company as a claims adjuster running their "network" shops then managed a body shop myself. This is how it works with all of the major insurance carriers I have dealt with so I wuoldnt expect your sto be any different.

running boards

if by any chance you decide to get more stock running boards, pm me. last year i ordered a brand new pair of running boards, in the toyota box and brand spankin new. the first ones came in, and a month later another identical box showed up on my doorstep!!!!!! I guess it was a two for the price of one! :whoops:
i tried to contact the guy but he never returned the call, so now i have an extra pair, brand new and still in the box. i dont even know if they still sell them new stock, but if they do they will be around 500$.

take the $$$ for the flare as well and remove the others. Sell them if you can and then have the areas Rhino Lined.

Go take a sledge to the front bumper and put that money toward and ARB :D

Ok, I've been going over the cruiser all day and searching on here and here's what I've come up with for a damage report:

Body/Cosmetic:

Rear fender flare cracked
Rear door dented but functional(can most likely be pulled out and reparied)
Front door dented and deformed so that it could not be opened without hitting the front fender
Front fender completely pushed in near the front door, slightly deforming the inner fender as well
Front fender flare in multiple pieces
Running board is cracked in several places and the majority of the support brackets are deformed

It appears that the a-pillar survived unscathed as well as the rocker panel.

Mechanical damage:
The draglink looks similar to this: U
There is an EVER SO SLIGHT twist in the splines of the sector shaft in the steering box. I only noticed it because Christo mentioned it in another thread about draglinks.

Basically the front passenger side tire was struck from behind forcing it forward. It appears it rotated on the knuckle forcing the draglink to bend(why the steering wheel wasn't ripped from my brother's hands instead, I don't know, but it's probably a good thing). The tie-rod appears unscathed, but the knuckles appear to be leaking more grease than usual. The seals were starting to go before, but now there is a significant amount of grease present on the balls. Could that be related?

I'm wondering if there are any other areas to examine for damage. I will be taking this to the dealer tomorrow for a body shop as well as a mechanical estimate. I just want to make sure that the mechanics see everything so that we don't have to file supplementary claims. Thanks!

pssssssssst, that's not a good sign :flipoff2:

seriously, doesn't sound all that bad. try to convince them to replace the full knuckles etc and keep all the bits minus gaskets for trail spares. of course, convincing them you need new outer axle shafts would not be a bad idea either

good luck with it. btw, i would not let this dude get near it again. ;)
