Hi , I have a 24v M8000 on my BJ 74. It is an adequate winch, it gets used on average 1hour a month, non continious. Anyways it gets HOT quickly , It doesnt matter if pulling the BJ 74 out of a swamp or at home "respooling the winch" at home with no load, IT gets hot. I service the Warn quite frequently.

The other day I was playing around with the cable off of the drum ,running it with no load and within a minute of running it if I put my hand on the drum, I could burn my skin. The drum gets hot before the motor way hotter. It is runnig great ie no abnormal noises . I have no complaints at all besides it being twice as slow as my 8274. Since new in Jan 08 it runs hot but also it is very reliable. OH in July up in the North West Territories I ran it for 5hrs in one day pulling the 74 out of the muskeg (didnt change a thing), Thanks for any Ideas, I know there is nothing I can modify, the power and ground cables are HUGE diameter.

My guess is that the brake mechanism inside the drum is not releasing. When the motor turns it should turn the brake off before turning the drum, in your case the brake might be rubbing the drum and therefor making it hot.

Have you checked inside the drum?

Hi All:

I have to say that after reading your description that "Haffi" seems to have a very valid point! You might have to dis-assemble this M8000 to check the brake system.

Regards,

Alan

I have the same issue with my M12000 (1986 24V ex-US Military). Spooled in the cable, and I could fry an egg on the drum. I picked it up a few months back and have had it all apart, except the drum! Thanks for the tips; I'll have a look!

Prado-T; I will likely be at the next Coastal Cruiser's meeting with my BJ42 and winch, if you want to share ideas.

Cheers,
Rob

Thanks for your input guys, It must be the brake, I will pull it apart when we get back from our C.C. trip (long weekend)

Rob 10-4 on that .
