2.7 liter aftermarket muffler

Who has one? What kind? Likes/dislikes?

I priced some Magnaflows, Flowmasters, Dynaflows, and Thrushes today. I haven't decided yet and wanted a second opinion aside from the two sales guys.

Dynomax super turbo 17747 should just be a touch louder and deeper than stock. I have the 17748 which is identical but 2.5" inlets. I like the super turbos, they are cheap and do not annoy.

I will say about dynomax, the first 17748 I had began tossing out pieces of its batting and got louder and louder every time I drove it. I called dynomax and they shipped me a new one without even questioning it.

When you say a touch louder and deeper...what do you mean?

The reason I ask is because I hate those fart can mufflers...really hate them, and would be really upset if this is what happened. Might be getting a 2.7 shortly, so I looked and found two clips to see how one would sound...is one of these close to what you have?

If a high flow cat is installed, or the cat removed all together, will the loss of backpressure affect the 4cy?

I think OEM exhaust tone is affected by the muffler and the cat.
Remove the cat and it will be loud, change the muffler and you will also likely be louder.
I assume if you want some more horspower do some research on air filters, header and exhausts... not sure which one yields more gains for the $

I'm not as much worried about the tone and sound as I am engine performance. As it's a 4wd 4 cyl.

Will a free flowing exhaust hurt or help the output of the 2.7l? I'm fine with breaking even. The CEL doesn't concern me either since I've ordered the piece from URD to 'fix' that.

Well, while it would be nice to gain a little HP, and better MPG, sound and tone does count for me, and I would not want it loud...actually...would like to make it a quiet as possible under normal driving...with me often running low RMPs...

The dynomax did not sound anything like a fart can. I put one on my 91 civic 4cyl and it sounded like a factory muffler. On my 3.4L it has a nice low rumble. There is some drone but that is probably cause I only have short a turn down for the tail pipe and I am using a high flow cat.

I'm getting something in the morning. I've got a 7 am appointment with the muffler shop. He keeps FlowMaster, a DynaMax equivalent, and a few other common brands. Ima get him to make me a test pipe, too. I'm hoping they'll be enough room for a side exit exhaust.

I got a cat back 2.5" FlowMaster 40. There wasn't enough room for a side exit so he tucked it higher than the stock was. He slipped a 2.25" straight thru DynaMax on first, but it was louder.

Well, I am off the dynomax band wagon, I'm on my second 17748 and the second one is spitting out pieces of fiberglass thread and you can smell/see smoke coming out the tail pipe after I turn the engine off... Anyone know of a good quiet flowmaster or magnaflow?

Was very happy with my Flowmaster I had on my '86. Just had that great, wholesome tone like a V8 Tundra (same deep, rich sound).

Clueless as to the model, unfortunately. I'll keep an eye on this thread because I too am looking for a new muffler. The stock exhaust sound, to me, makes it sound like there's a chipping/clicking sort of sound when then engine is under load. Not nearly as sexy as my father's stock Tundra or GF's stock 3.4L.

My FM 40 is much louder than stock. I haven't gotten to hear it pulling hard without me driving yet. I may get someone to run it hard and make a pass by me sometime. I did hear it on the highway when I passed a box trailer on an 18 wheeler and it sounded like a baby lamb at 70 mph. Best description that I can give. I'm thinking of putting a glasspack inline with it to act as a secondary muffler or resonator.

I ran a 40 series behind a stock fj40 and a 350 suburban. behind the 40 it was loud but hardly noticable over the mud tires, in the chevy it was annoying as hell. the 70 series is much more conducive to highway trips but has a nice rumble upon acceleration. Having said that, once I replace the exhaust manifold on the Taco I will prolly put a 40 series on it.
