Has anyone been to Mt Mitchell NC. Can you drive to the summit or do you hike to the top. If you have to hike to he top how far and how hight. Also is there camping and hotels in the area. Some of the stuff on line is pretty lacking in info

Check with the upstate folks, they had an Oct. (Parkway ride thread) ride and went to the summit. pretty good info on camping on there also

You can ride almost to the top. Short walk to the summit and climb the tower if you like. Great views north and west from the parking lot. Also hot chocolate etc.
Worth a trip. Not open throughout the winter. Parkway starts closing down from the first frosts, closes by sections moving downhill both ways as the winter progresses.

We parked on top of Mt. Mitchell a few years ago and hiked a couple of peaks over to Mt. Craig. Great views on both sides of the ridge, but very chilly at night (we went in March). They've got potable water at the valley on the bottom of Mt. Craig, but it took us a little longer than planned. You've got some sections of 60-75 degree grade climbs, that we weren't expecting.
