So, I have accepted a new job and need to move to Austin TX from Missouri at the end of the month. I am going to do the move and not hire a company. I am going to rent a 26' truck and tow my trailer, as none of my other vehicles can tow it. And my wife is going to drive down in the Jetta with the kids. Here is my problem- how do I get my other 2 vehicles down? I may be able to secure another driver, but am unsure if I could tow the Honda on a dolly with the LC. 70s are not powerhouses ya' know.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the vehicles down? Or is anyone headed down to TX that would tow a ride for some gas money? A transport wants $750 for the CRX and $850 for the Cruiser, which I think is insane. Or maybe someone has a trailer that can fit the Honda and LC on it and would tow them down for a fee.

And no, I am not going to sell the diesel :)

Cheers,
Jason

keep looking on the auto transport sites.

The quotes you got are exceptionally high.

I shipped a 40 from Oklahoma to Florida for 500 dollars (insured,licensed,bonded)

I also shipped my latest 40 from Indiana to Oklahoma for about 500 insured, etc...

You can even get discounts for shipping more than one vehicle at a time...

I used Express Auto Transport and they did a fair job.

Good Luck!

If you try the discount airfare sites, a pair of one-way airline tickets to fly back out to pick up the last two vehicles might be cheaper than a transporter. You could pre-park them at the airport before you blow town. That's all I can think of.

Did this two years ago.... not necessarily a "good" idea, but it worked for me. I got the biggest Penske truck they would rent to me and drove my fj40 into the back of it. I put the brake on, put it in gear, and used these 8x8 cedar blocks on all four corners to keep it from sliding around in there. I stuffed all sides with cardboard boxes packed with shop stuff and then filled the rear with the rest of my junk. Then I hitched up the car hauler trailer and drove the fj45 onto it and cinched it down. That Penske could barely get up to speed but it made the five hour drive. I drove VERY carefully and frequently stopped to check my load.
Now, if you don't want to do that, talk to the autotransport guys directly. You will get a MUCH better rate than going through a broker. Pay cash. I think my last 40 shipped from AZ to NC was only about five fifty door to door, but I paid him cash and was willing to wait for it.

thanks for the info/links. I received a quote for $1290 for both with Express. Not as bad. I will ponder a bit and then make a decision.

Where are you going to be working/living in Austin?

Dave, Excellent- I am wanting to get involved in the local chapter down there, and I can see that you are involved. Please give me details on this, PM me if need be.

I am going to be working near the Arboretum and want to live within 5 miles of it. I lived in DC for 5.5 years and sat in enough traffic for 2 lifetimes, so it is really important for me to live nearby. If you have any suggestions advice, I welcome it.

Jason

We've got a great bunch of folks here in our local LSLC chapter. We meet on the last Thursday of the month at Rudy's BBQ off of 183 North. It's probably 5-10 minute drive from the Arboretum area.

As far housing/location goes, there are a bunch of members that live in NW Austin that could give you some good advice on location/cost/schools. I live off of Anderson Mill/183 area which isn't too far (15 minutes) from the Arboretum. Traffic is getting worse, but nowhere near the level of a Houston or Washington, D.C...

Feel free to PM me with any questions...

Are you asking me or telling me?

niether.

asking would imply some sort of emotional interest in your whereabouts.

telling would imply the power to do so.

its merely a suggestion. :)
