Hey guys - I am moving to Encinitas in late July. I know there are a bunch of Cruisers in the area - I must have seen 50 of them last visit - is there a preferred shop or two where people get their 100 series worked on?

I second The Truck Shop, I also really appreciate WOW Automotive in Ramona for its more friendly and family-owned service, however, they are less suited for custom off-road mod installations if that is what you are looking for.

Everyone will say Truck Shop and SD Trux - which are solid choices for Land Cruisers...but I like D&T Auto Repair or Alternative Automotive.

I'm also in Encinitas - welcome!

Welcome to San Diego!
Thanks, guys! Appreciate the warm welcome. I am less looking for off-road mods, etc. and more looking for a reliable and reasonable shop that is knowledgable about these trucks - for regular maintenance or mechanical issues. In Atlanta I found a really great young man via this forum that works on my truck. He is 100X more knowledgable than the dealer and reasonably priced.

For reference, I have a 2003 with 291,500 miles and going strong!

SDTrux. Owner drives a 100 series

Alternative Auto in Escondido has a few of us as customers. Good people and great pricing

Any of you guys that live near the beach do anything on the undercoat to prevent rust?
I'd say you have a few options on this that vary in price.

You have the DIY method aka a few off the shelf products to use (a driveway is key or some place to allow you to work, an apartment parking lot isn't exactly the best). A lot of people in the NE and rust belt use fluid film. Easy to procure at most any store, can spray no extra tools required.
Another product that I myself have used multiple times is wool wax. Welcome to kellsportproducts.com - Woolwax lanolin vehicle undercoating. Woolwax stops rust ! - https://www.kellsportproducts.com/ is the sponsor on the forum and they have a discount code if you search. I like it because it is thick, goes on easy, and after a few coats the barrier has basically been formed and won't be letting anything rust. Plus they claim that it will stop rust from spreading with the barrier formed to not let nay oxygen interact with the metal. Air compressor required.
Cost of either about hundred to a few hundred depending on how much you use of fluid film/wool wax.

Professional shop undercoat the vehicle. I have personal experience with this living in the rust belt and as much as it helped, I am starting to see some rust on my DD (not my 80) be affected after 10+ years. I do spray it down on the regular now to help but hard to stop this process without more work with a metal wire wheel. Costly in the several hundred to a grand for a quality job.

You mention living in the rust belt but your profile says San Diego?

The guys at SD Truck Shop said they would do the undercoat with Corrosion X for $250. I assume this is the equivalent of me doing it in my driveway, only better. Not sure what I would spend to buy the needed amount but the tradeoff on time, etc. seems worth it. There is a shop in Oceanside where they will put the rig on a lift for me for $20/hour and I can go nuts with all the off the shelf stuff i want - this too seems like a better option than the driveway?

I lived in Michigan a lot of my life before moving here and my daily driver saw a lot of winters with salt that did a lot of havoc on it.

This is the kit I bought and the gallon size has lasted me almost 3 full sprays of the undercarriage. Woolwax Auto & Truck Undercoating kit #1 ONE Gallon Jug Ki - https://www.kellsportproducts.com/Woolwax-Auto-Truck-Undercoating-kit-1-ONE-Gallon-Jug-Kit-with-PRO-GUN-Wands_p_45.html
It really comes down to time and what do you feel yours is worth as you have mentioned. I knew I could lay down a tarp in a driveway and knock this out in 2-3 hours being very liberal on the coating.

What condition is your undercarriage? Mine was pristine and the reason why I knew I could do it myself. If there are some questionable spots, having a shop take care of this would be a better option in my mind.

Thanks. Just to be clear, are you still doing the undercoat in SD? Or just when you were in Michigan? Mine is pretty damn pristine so gonna do it.

Or three. Holler if this ever lines up plz
There is a place in Oceanside that will rent a bay and put your rig on a lift for like $20 per hour. They have some other tools apparently, but it is basically DIY. I am sure we can get three rigs done pretty easily, especially if we have two guys working at once - assuming that is doable.

I just had the coat done right before I moved here several months ago, still going to be on my yearly-ish rotation cause why not.
My daily is another story and needs a lot of love on the rust side, but gets a spray down every week to two weeks on the underside and a good coat of waxing every monthish (I live 2 blocks from the beach).

I have never used a lift to coat mine, just put down a tarp on the driveway, drive it, throw on some coveralls and go to town on the understand
