I am looking to get into a new sport/hobby...I have an old Cannondale MTB that a friend gave to me about 8 years ago. It's a Lefty front fork and it seems like it may need rebuilt/replaced (not sure of my options), but other than that, I had it serviced 4-5 years ago and its totally ride-able, as is. Anybody here mountain bike and/or could meet me to check out my bike, ride a novice trail, and provide some guidance? I think that all I really need is a helmet and I would be ready to go try it out. I'd even throw the bike in the Land Cruiser if there is somewhere off the beaten path to check out. thx

I have ridden and/or raced for >20 years, but live up the hill in Flagstaff. So, I can't really check out your bike. But, I can offer other suggestions: Probably the best beginner area in the valley to try "real mountain biking" is McDowell Mtn Park in Ftn. Hills. There are however, tons of great places to try it. I would recommend carrying extra tubes and an inflation device, lubing the chain, padded shorts, a helmet and gloves. Go ride the Pemberton Trail, or just about any other one at MMP. The park is very MTB friendly.

absolutely wear gloves (not for blister but for when you crash), get a helmet that wraps around your lower head, be light on front brake on gravel terrain like S. mtn., fatigue can be a big enemy so don't go more than a couple miles round trip first time, you'll get sloppy and possibly crash if you're outa shape, wear a camel back with plenty of water, if you fall the camelback may insulate your back, even a little can be a big deal. Bring lot's of water.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I had not thought about gloves, but at the minimum a helmet and gloves sounds like are must have items. I will get some and go check out McDowell Mountain Park.
