POCATELLO, ID (September 5) -- BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) member and off-highway motorcyclist, John Starbuck, has found a new way to support the cause of preserving recreational access to public lands. He's auctioning off a brand-new GPR V2 Undermount Steering Damper on eBay, with all the proceeds going BRC. The auction will end Thursday, September 11, 2008.
"I decided to start the auction as a simple way to raise funds for the BRC," states Starbuck. "I posted a few threads on KTMTalk (www.ktmtalk.com) and ThumperTalk (www.thumpertalk.com), which generated some buzz. [My hope was] that others would also want to start donating their proceeds from spare parts auctions directly to BRC."
Starbuck isn't alone in posting his auction. The phenomenon of auctions for charities is a growing aspect of eBay's business, and is indeed an excellent way to support the BlueRibbon Coalition in its efforts to keep trails open for recreationists of all stripes. The Slednecks' auction back in May is another example of this kind of thing. That auction involved a one-of-a-kind, custom painted SOS helmet, which eventually sold for $840. Another eBay auction back in July centered around a KTM "2007 SX 85" motorcycle sold by Moore and Sons KTM dealership to raise money to fight the Clear Creek Closure.
John Starbuck has only been a member of BRC for a short time, but he's making up for that with dedication and zeal. "I decided to join BRC after reading about their involvement in helping to keep trails and roads open for the public to enjoy," Starbuck tells us. "Members like Del Albright and Don Amador inspire me to join the fight to protect our rights to ride responsibly. I like to educate fellow riders on access issues as well as riding responsibly."
So what exactly is a "GPR V2 Undermount Steering Damper?" Starbuck tells us in his own words that it's "a hydraulic mechanism that controls the movement of the handlebars [and reduces the impact of] unexpected jolts from roots, rocks, or ruts. This model sits under the handlebar (an 'Undermount')."
"I personally will not ride without one," says Starbuck. "It is as essential as a helmet!"
We at the BlueRibbon Coalition are extremely thankful to John Starbuck, Slednecks, and Moore and Sons for stepping up to the plate and getting the ball rolling. It's people like them who make what we do possible. Their efforts and dedication make all the difference.
"I believe that the online auctions are an easy way to support the BRC," Starbuck concludes. "It's simple to set up, and I believe that bidders are willing to pay a bit more to support a great cause...If you ride motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, or mountain bikes; if you drive a 4x4; even if you hike on public lands; you need an advocate, and that advocate is the BRC. Get involved before it's too late!"
