After you mentioned it I made the connection between engine RPM and how the power steering performed. Originally I had thought it was just the auto locker, but then I noticed as soon as the engine RPM's came up the steering started to respond even if the front was still locked up.
I have one of the PSC Saginaw pumps on the 40 and it will crank the wheels over even at idle with the front locked. Originally I got the PSC conversion kit with the hydro assist, but I've never installed the hydro piston and haven't missed it.
