So I spent 5 weeks in Medford Oregon. Before that someone asked about mattresses
and I sent them to MooseJaw that forwarded to PublicLands. So I go to REI and across
the parking is Dicks Sporting and attached is this ‘PublicLands’.
It is huge! Dicks Sporting Goods bought MooseJaw Online store. Intent was to create
brick and mortar store competitor to REI etc. I got talking to a young guy.
Now apparently after creating 17+ store they are closing all but 3. He thinks its
not legit process. Interesting to talk to the guy. Who figures he is about to lose his job.
This kind of thing makes stuff we buy more expensive when really good reasonable
priced online store gets eaten up. Wonder if anyone has any input?
I bought my Exped Megamat from MooseJaw, it was by far the best price at the time.
Half the price including exchange compare to any option in Canada.

Congrats on the megamat. We have 2 bought from REI and love them. We got them on sale but still paid a hefty price IIRC.

Regarding Dick's...
I have a visceral hatred of Dick's due to their firearms policies and will no longer buy anything associated with that corporation.

Well, they managed to destroy one of my favourite online shopping go to places. I won’t be doing much
with them in future.

Forgot to mention Dick's also wrecked Cabela's which was my go-to place for hunting, camping and outdoors stuff. No more. Sadly.😥

What’s relationship between Dicks and Cabelas? Thought Bass Pro owned Cabelas ?

You are correct my mistake. I don't shop at Cabelas due to what bass pro did to them.

Edit: I'm running out of places to buy outdoor stuff LOL.

Anyone remember when MooseJaw was quirky? Your pkg would come with a sticker that said something like "Hiking. Camping. French kissing"

I think venture capital should stay away from good places and just let them be a little less profitable than they could be. On the other hand, I'm not selling a quirky, less revenue-optimized business, either.

Saddest part of this story is that you had to spend 5 weeks in Medford.

And yes, Dick’s sucks.

Vulture capital should stay away from ANY place.

Haha! 2 weeks in hotel bed with worst Covid I’ve ever had. But I liked Medford. Worked in over 150 other cities in US that don’t even come close to being as nice.

A bit off topic. This reminds me of years ago, probably around 2000, in the early days of pop ups and before pop up blockers. I had a coworker talking about the new golf clubs he was about to buy. He went to show them to me and typed in the search bar “Dicks”…. On a public work station, in the middle of the hospital computer hub on the floor. As you can imagine (what seemed like) hundreds of pop ups came up, none of them golf clubs.

And it is sad to hear dicks bought moose jaw.

I think the first internet acronym I learned was NSFW! My company is embedded in this laptop,
gotta think before I type anything into it.

There probably aren’t many here who remember, but in the mid-late 90’s, Dick’s was a place called Galvan’s. At least it was here in MN. I don’t know who bought out who, but it went from a store that had a little bit of everything to one which basically sold golf clubs and basketball shorts, and if you didn’t care for either sport, you were SOL.

I’ve had a Cabela’s credit card since 1991. They are a shell of what they once were. They discovered e-commerce and started making cookie-cutter stores, buried Gander Mountain, then got buried, themselves by Bass Pro.

Medford is actually centraly located as you can run west to CC along the Smith River or head east along the Rogue up to the North side of Crater Lake, There is some beautiful country just south west of Crater as you start to gain elevation, it alot like the southern sierra.
