I want to run the factory center cap on my cruiser wheel and at the same time run 35" tires.

First question is how narrow of a rim could I fit a 35" tire onto?

Second question is where can I get a factory rim widened? (only interested in local)
Or is it possible to weld tabs on a 16" steel rim that is already wide enough?

I think a 7'' wide rim would be the narrowist to fit a 35x1250 tire. Don't know of anywhere local to get them widened. It is definitely possible to wide on the tabs and run a 16'' wheel though.

When I checked about one year ago, I couldnt find anyone local that would widen a factory wheel. That may of changed?

BFG suggests 8.50-10.00 " size rim for that size tire. you could squeeze it on a 7" like the 80 guys do with thier 35 & 37's on the 7.5 Sequoia wheels.

the hubcap tabes would need to be a creative welder type not afraid to try it out.

if all you're interested in is a 35" diameter tire, you can find tires skinnier than a 35x12.5...they're harder to find and more expensive, but they do exist! super swamper is the easiest to find in sizes like 35x9.5x16 or 15. maybe not the look you're going for, but it's a 35" tire to fit a skinnier wheel.

I need a streetable tire so the super swamper is out of the question.

I called stockton wheel and they gave me two choices. They will cut a factory wheel (that I send them) and weld in a strip to make my wheel wider. $165/each Or they will cut the center out of my factory wheel and weld it to an already wider outer wheel. $135/each
I am first sending them information on the FJ40 center cap to see if they could fit tabs onto a smoothie steel wheel that they already stock & sell. It would be $25/each to put tabs on a wheel if they have a wheel that would work. And the wheel would be $125. (so if that would work each wheel would cost $150 plus one way shipping.

Still really sucks that 6th largest city (phx) we dont have one person that can do this work.

. Bummer that there's nowhere locally that can widen wheels. The shipping costs back and forth is what makes this cost prohibitive .
I think a 15x8 steely that is powder coated white, Grey , or black with a OEM factory hubcap would look good with a wider tire on a 40, 55, 60, or 62
Always have been interested in this and trying to figure out the details and looking into some options. I Will post up if it happens

I found a company that would sell just the clips that could then be used to mount the center cap on a larger diameter steel rim. It might be the cheapest option.

I shipped stock 40 rims to Stockton about $25 shipping each, they cut out the centers and put them in 16"x10" standard in stock wheels, they have 8" and 10" stock, if they cut a 10" down to 9" it gets pricey. They were great to work with, ask for Rick.
