I am about to pull the trigger on Hankook Dynapro ATM 285/75/16 tires and currently have an unused 275/70/16 spare tire. Any reason I shouldn't rely on this as a spare? The 285/75/16 should be about 5-6% larger diameter. Will this set off traction control?

I'm not that bothered by the extra cost of a 5th tire as I am about the mixed results in fitting a 285/75/16 in the spare well that have been reported here...

There's your answer right there. If you're just using the spare in emergencies and not depending on it for long distances, you'll be fine. But for the peace of mind, just get the 5th matching tire. Then you can also work it into the rotation, like yotasavg does.

I have these exact tires. I am pretty happy with them. I ended up buying a matching spare too, because my original was dry rotted. The spare fits fine in the stock location in the back. It is a little snug to the trailer hitch I have on mine though.

I used to run the opposite setup from yours, 31" tires on the truck with a 33" spare. Worked fine the times that I needed the spare.

I had an autolocker in the rear, so I moved a front tire to the rear and ran the mismatched set on the front to get home.

what's considered a long distance?

I had to run a slightly taller spare over the weekend for about 80 miles. I could feel a little pull, but there doesn't seem to be any weirdness now that the correct one is back on.

80 miles is fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

Interested in this answer as well. Finding one reasonably priced 16" rim is proving to be a PITA

Revoked, I got an OEM rim from BTI Wheels here in SLC for $100.00, no affiliation, just liked their prices and service. Their inventory is changing often but he had 3 when I went to pick up mine. Not sure what shipping would run you, but give them a call if you don't have a rim yet. Brandon is the owner, web site is http://www.rimssaltlakecity.com/ and phone number is (801) 747-0566.

Quick hijack... I recently got a nail in the sidewall of one of my Michelin LTX. They were all at about 8-9/32's so ~70%. I replaced the one blown with a brand new Michelin LTX. I was concerned about the AWD/ Traction Control as well but i went by the stealership and they told me I had nothing to worry about.

Is this a legitimate issue for long term use? I may just have a tire shop shave it down for peace of mind. Or just go ahead and buy 4 new 285's :D

Sounds like you're gonna need a fresh set of shoes, just sell the ones you've got and go ahead and upgrade haha but I wouldn't be worried about that, such a minimal difference in size wouldn't matter in my opinion.

Agreed. Just go with it.
