Some of you know the Mira Loma road back by the gun club has been gated. I decided to try to find out what was was up with that so I looked up my county commissioner, David Humke and sent him an email
Dear Commissioner Humke,
I am writing you to ask about a gate that has been installed on the end of Rio Wrangler at the point where it transitions from pavement to a gravel/dirt road. (We have always know this as Mira Loma Rd.) I was under the impression this was a county road, is that correct? If so why has the county closed it to the public? If it is not is the gate legal? Is the "No trespassing" sign valid? This road has been open to public use as at least since the late seventies when I moved to Reno. Is it legal to close off a road that has been in public use for that long?

I live in SE Reno and have used the Mira Loma road for many years to access the public lands the east of town. It concerns me that this might be the first step in restricting access to the Virginia Mountain range, an area rich in history, wildlife and off road sports that should, in my opinion, remain open to the public.

I look forward to your timely reply.

Respectfully,
Blah blah
This was Sunday to my surprise I got a reply later that day
Mr. Johnson,
Thank you for your email describing the problem. By a copy of this email I am asking Sarah Tone from Washoe County to begin to look into this matter. She will contact you as soon as possible.

If anyone else wants to ping him on this here is a link to the page with his contact info.

By the way I understand the road is still open from rattle Snake Mt and Hidden Valley so I'm not sure what is up with the gate by my house.

Interesting. I assume S. Meadows Pkwy is still open to Mira Loma?

S meadows doesn't connect to Mira Loma, it dead ends on the west side of the Steamboat Ditch.

So what did you ever find out? It is good you checked this out/Stay after it. We had a similiar problem in CC when a subdivision tried to close acces to Ash canyon. The uproar from the populace has kept it open to this day.

There was a "Go ask Joe" segment on this earlier this week, so it looks like I'm not the only one questioning it.

The readers Digest version;

The area in question was annexed from the county by the City of Reno.
Per Barbara DiCianno
The road is located in parcel #165-011-03 owned by Corona Cyan, LLC, c/o RSF Partners, Inc., 3232 McKinney Ave, Suite 890, Dallas Texas."

According to the go ask Joe segment Corona Cyan put the gate up to stop people from dumping trash in the area.

Full quote from Barbara's last e-mail;

I have worked with every appropriate department and learned our Legal Department has to review the information to determine if the Desert Way Presumed Public designation came with the parcel when it was annexed into the City. I provided all of my research to the City Attorney's Office some time ago. I will contact the City Attorney to see if there's any way he can expedite the ruling from his department. The road is located in parcel #165-011-03 owned by Corona Cyan, LLC, c/o RSF Partners, Inc., 3232 McKinney Ave, Suite 890, Dallas Texas.

Who would be on board to adopt that stretch of road?

I was thinking if we contact Corona Cyan and propose to keep it clean they might remove the gate.

We could probably get some support from Reno4x4 as well.

What do you guys think??

I saw the "Ask Joe" segment and thought you might have been the "Anonymous" person. ;).

Finally got closure on this;
Good Morning Dan -You may already know, but I just learned that the gate at Desert Way has been unlocked. In working with staff I was informed the main reason the property owner created the barrier was because people accessing his property were not picking up after themselves. Users were leaving a large amount of trash behind.

It was suggested that, in the spirit of cooperation, citizens who regularly use the road for recreation, organize some type of clean up effort in the area. This could help minimize the impact of the public's use and keep the land in good condition. I would be happy to help a citizen group coordinate a clean up.

Again, thank you so much for your patience while we worked through this process.

Sincerely,

I was thinking about posting something on Reno4x4 about a clean up day.

If anybody in our club was interested we could take a Saturday and do a clean up. Other than the canyon where all the shooters leave their crap :mad: the road is usually not that trashed.

It cost about $20 to empty my Utility trailer at the transfer station, which I'll pop for if I get some bodies to give me a hand loading it.

I'm down!!

Depending on the date of course I'll help.

Set a date and I will try to be there. Sat. would be best for me.
Heavenly closes 4/15. However the snow may be gone by the end of the month.:crybaby:

Depending on the day, I'm in.

See my reply to Barbara below;

Good morning Barbara,
I presented the idea of a clean up to the off road club I belong to, Battle Born Cruisers of Northern Nevada, and there was a very positive response to doing a clean up on the road. We would like to coordinate with you and the property owner so they know that we are willing to do our part to alleviate the trash issue that lead to the gate.We would probably set the day for a Saturday as a club activity. Let me know what we need to do next.

Long term I will try to get some other off road groups involved for future clean ups.

Thanks Again,
Dan Johnson

Well Done Rusty. Depending on the date, I may be able to help out as well.

Off topic, but you are right, that canyon where people shoot looks like something out of a post apocalyptic movie.

It looks like they might start enforcing the restricted shooting zone in that canyon, this sign is new
