Hi everyone,
I used my MillerMatic 135 today for basically the first real use. We had to weld a bunch of stools that were broken.

We welded for a while, then the wire got stuck and would not come out. So we pulled on the wire and freed it up from the tip. But after it got stuck once, it kept doing it. Do the tips go bad? If so, how long do they take to go bad? Is there a way to clean the tips, or do you just toss them? We were using 0.30 flux core wire without gas. Both people who were welding don't know much about welding, so there was a decent amount of splatter. What type of maintainence should be done to the welder?

Thank you,
Zack

What you experienced was "burn back." This is when the wire burns back and attaches to the tip of the contact tip. You will need to replace the contact tip. You can buy the contact tips at any welding store or flea bay.

How long the tips last depend on your welding skill. You might have better luck with some .035 tips for running .030 flux core wire.

You could try using a very small drill bit or oxy/acetylene torch cleaner.

You probably arced back into the tip--that's why they are replaceable. Get a new tip out of your consumables box, unscrew the old one, screw on the new one and be happy. Also tighten the feed roller a bit.

edit--dang Charles is fast. You do have less problems with this over time. I wrecked a tip my first day welding, then changed the tip only once during my entire FJ40 build. I run .30 tips with .30 wire. You can buy new tips for about $1.20 each-I bought a little card of 10 of the two sizes of wire I use.

Thanks everyone! But is there any specific maintaince to do to the machine?

No maintenance is needed. You might need to increase the wire feed speed (WFS) if you keep having burn back issues. Try using .035 contact tip if you have lots of problems with .030 flux core wire.

charles. Do you have a book on how to use a welder yet?

Eric,

If I had a book, you'd want to look at the pictures instead of the reading... Oops... wrong type of book...
;-)
