How come no one has ever mentioned or talked about putting a Mercedes diesel from one of the Sprinters into an 80. I have been researching it for quite a while and it seems doable. Am I missing something?

that would be sweet!

Actually, the plan is to use the transmission out of the sprinter as well and adapt it to the toyota transfer case. In Europe, they have 4x4 sprinters, so it should not be too big of a deal...I hope.

Same engine is used in the M series 4wd. There's a diesel G wagon too but I'm not sure if it's the same.
Not sure if the M series come with a transfer box or not, the G series definitely do.

At work we have a Sprinter 1 ton, dually, high roof, loaded with shelves, the engine kicks ass, very economic and it pulls the truck as if it was a car. The only thing that would suck about it would be the cost. Other then that it would be really cool to have one in a Cruiser

We looked into the sprinter engines and found that they were too difficult to find crate motors for. Excellent power curve though. I have been a mercedes fan since the old 240d era. We are currently developing a conversion kit for use with the VM motori engines found in the Jeep liberty's. These are intended to go into the new body style tacoma trucks and jeep wranglers. After we nail down these vehicles I'd like to pursue using it with older FJ's. -Todd

Whats also needed is a conversion kit for the VM engines into a LJ70/78 to replace the 2LT that have head troubles;)

Here quite a few 2.5 VMs had problems with head crackings as well. Personally I don't think that's what I would want in a toyota. I'd rather have a 2LTE than a used mercedes sprinter engine, drivers of delivery and courrier trucks have a bad habit of abusing them. Especially when they are well powered. Last time I was at a mercedes truck dealer there was about 3 or 4 of those sprinters with engines being taken apart

the 5 cylinder diesel uses a transmission called the NAG1. It is a common transmission in mopar equipped autos. That engine is commonly used in the jeep cherokee in europe. There is one of these motors for sale on camerota.com with a busted valve cover. Check it out. This is a very reliable motor with lots of power and has the ability to mate to many transmissions.. I want one in my cruiser.

Want to resurrect this thread. Is there anyone making an adapter whether it be for the tranny or tcase for toyota? Or is there a complete 4x4 drivetrain that could be used?

Have any of the Merc to Yota adapters made it out of the vaporware stage yet? I've seen mention on here of a few folks working on various approaches, but have not seen any completed ones to date.

Please correct if the above comment is wrong.

Likewise- I have PMd two people who are supposed to be working on one, but have not heard anything .

I've thought about this same concept for quite a while now, using the Sprinter motor, however when you see the cost of purchasing one and think about the trouble adapting and working out the electronics... it seems like a good Toyota diesel fits the bill better.
