Anyone interested in buying 80-84 Mercedes 3.0 5 cyl diesel engines? I have access to about 3, no idea what they might be worth, not sure if they run or not. Just a feeler to see if its worth pulling them out of the cars or not. They are complete with injector pumps included. Anyone seen any for sale somewhere else?? Let me know, PM me.

The cars in good running condition are anywhere from 3k to 5k. The engine might be worth in good condition with good compression 1-2k. Maybe a touch more or less.

Also this is pure guess..... I've watched the prices a bit over the last few years as I own a 300D. The prices have increased in recent times with fuel prices.

Thanks, so you put that mercedes turbo on a 3B right?

No. I am referring to the whole engines.

I have no idea if the turbos that come on some Mercedes would be good or not. But I bet they are close. That depends on the physical shape of them(how they are clocked or how the exhaust housing is shaped). My mercedes is non turbo'd

Merc. Diesel

I have access to one of these engines in good running condition for free. I had ideas about putting it into my 40 but i didnt do any research to see what my options were as far as tranny and T/C. Does anyone have any ideas?

I found a guy in Texas that put one in an 80 series. Before that he put a Nissan diesel engine out of an old Maxima in a 60 series. The way he explained it to me he had to fab flywheels and mounts for both projects. Not sure about the trans issues or what he used. I think I still have some pics he sent me of both, if I find them I will post. But both trucks did run and drive and he sent me tons of photos, so I guess with enough time and fab work anything is possible......

These are all the pics I could find of the Mercedes Diesel in the 80 and Nissan diesel in the 60. Cant tell much about the applications from the pics but if I can dig up his contact info I will drop him a line. Went a little crazy with the emblems on the rear, but man this guy can fab!!!

Thats pretty cool. I may see about getting it and putting it into my other 40 but for now i lucked out on a 4BT with an NV4500HD behind it with all wires and whatever other parts i want off of the truck for $1500. The motor only has 39,000 miles on it. It still loks almost new.

I've got to talk to that guy with the 80. I have an '83 300D and I love the car and engine. It seems like the 5 cyl diesel wouldn't have enough power to push an 80. Any way I could get in touch with him to get info?

Still trying to dig up his info, I found the 60 for sale about a year ago online. We emailed and spoke on the phone several times. I think I can find his email but it may take me a few days. I wish I could post the 60 pics, I was going to buy the 60 from him but it was in pretty rough shape.

I used to have some G-wagons and my experience is that the 5cyl engines are very good but SO SLOW,i prefer the 6 cyl with turbo they deliver some power, but watch out for the first 350 td we had a lot of troubles with them in Europe the 300 td was more relaible

I own an '83 300TD and an '87 300D, as well as my naturally aspirated HJ60/62, (curb weight ~6,100).

Compare:

Pre-86 300D series (5-cylinder turbo): 87 hp@4400, 225 ft/lbs.@2500, curb weight ~3700 lbs.
1987 300D series (6-cylinder turbo): 143 hp,@4200 197 ft. lbs@2300, curb weight 3375 lbs.
The Gelandewagen (300GD) was not offered with the turbo, but the naturally aspirated version of that 5-cylinder and it's curb weight is ~5,260, and was dangerously slow.
HJ60: 103hp@3500, 177 ft.lbs.@1800
HJ61: 134hp@3500, 251 ft.lbs.@1800

So, while that Garret is a great turbo for a 3B (and possibly the 2H), the motor is really not a good option, despite its legendary bullet-proofness and record-setting lifespan (actually the record is held by a 240D, but the 300D-series are known to be about as durable). Mel Lowe put that turbo on his 3B (BJ60-->62), and is quite happy with it.

Your power outputs are way off for the 5-cyl merc engine. The turbo is approx. 120 hp/170 ft/lb. The non-turbo is quite a bit less.
