I took my 1999 3.4L V6 Tacoma 4x4 (manual Xmsn) to Meineke for a check engine diagnosis. They indicated the O2 sensors needed replacing as well as the cat converter. $1200 later the problem wasn't fixed. They then replaced both O2 sensors again. No joy. The they used Toyota O2 sensors. No joy. The Chk Eng light is still on and now the truck runs worse. When stepping on the gas, the eng revs and continues to do so even after the clutch is fully released. The more you step, the less power seems to be transferred to the transmission and the worse the eng RPMs. It acts as if I've got the clutch halfway down while giving the gas unless I very slowly and gradually accelerate. Please help.

From what you've typed, I think the two issues are unrelated. Your engine continues to rev when the clutch is not engaged because the clutch is slipping. Does it happen in only one gear? My experience is that it will happen worse in higher gears (4th,5th).

The 02 sensors are notorious for issues and only Toyota ones last anytime. You can take your truck to an auto parts store and have them run the code to see what codes are present.

I have never heard much good about Meineke. I agree with Liljlandon, your clutch seems to be on the brink. Is there not a local, independent, trustworthy shop in your area for service/help?

Perhaps the two issues are simply happening simultaneously. The truck does have 161K on it and the original clutch. Thanks for the reply.

The clutch is definitely unrelated, 161k on the original disk is a lot.

And I would avoid Meineke for anything... find a shop that actually knows Toyotas. Good luck!

Meineke had to buy a new engine for my daughters Corolla when she took it there for an oil change and the filter fell off the next day. Then they ruined the PS pump by filling the system with PS fluid (supposed to be ATF, which it clearly says on the cap). I fixed the PS myself, I didn't want them touching it again.

Take it someplace you can trust.
