I have tried everything and cannot find the measurements I need. I am rebuilding a 78 FJ40. 90% of the tub was shot and I am fabricating a new one myself. I need the measurements for the main support beam that runs width wise between the mid bed and the passenger/driver floor pans. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Hi brady,

I'm in the same boat with a '76.

I have the piece you are talking about, the rear seat support, mostly intact but needing a rebuild.. I think I can re use the floor panel and just make new edges and the back lip, going to blast it and see what is left.
The over all width is 63 3/4 "
It basically a box, made up of 4 pieces by the look of it. If some one has more detailed dimensions that could be taken to the steel shop so they can break the pieces into the appropriate shapes,it would be helpful.
If not, I am going to make dimension drawing when I fabricate mine.
Other than a few special pieces, with curves for the door lip and the tub surround top, most of it is pretty straight forward stuff.
I was thinking of using the frame as the jig for the back part of the tub, cutting it off at the door pillars just like Mr T did where it bolts to the door pillar.
I think it may be possible to do the middle floor section the same?
I was going to turn the front part of the tub over after I cut the back part off and make a jig to hold the door pillars in the correct place.
I need the dimension for the door pillars. The center to center distance of the two 1' diameter holes for the top posts.

Thanks jb

Thanks

Many thanks Coolerman for the links.

They will certainly give me some idea's
I was thinking of going with CCOT panels and making the ones I can, which don't really need the ribs formed into them, the floor panels.

I have 64 FJ40 which the tub is better than the '76 I have thought about a swap on the later frame with disc brake etc.

I also think I might just be able to find a small block with a two barrel for the cost of pulling it out of a truck and putting a later motor in the truck front a wreck for my farmer friend. He just uses it as if it was quad for farm work.
I have all the parts to hook it up to the 3 speed but a 4 speed would be better. It would be strictly a trail rig with no hard top.

Thanks jb

That tub is in about the same shape as the one I rebuilt. ;)

If you have the money I would give serious thought to buying a tub from one of the vendors besides CCOT. If you count all the sheet metal needed, welding consumables, and time necessary to rebuild one you'll find yourself money ahead. At the time I started no one had a tub I could afford and I wanted to 'do it myself'...

Good luck with your project!

Your not the lone ranger. I have a 75 rust bucket I'm working on.

I'm doing the new floor and rear wheel tubs out of aluminum tread plate and the outer tub in steel. To stiffen the back i'm going closing the back solid and using a top off a 74 (rear hatch to compliment the changes to the tub.

After the body is in one piece I'll do a cage and pull the set of 79 axles in and go with discs.

As you can see by the shot. The back half is so bad I had no chance to measurements.

If I had the welding and painting skills required it would even be better.:frown:
