Bit of an update with this one. After many years using the above method I have found an arduino controller to replace the factory TCU.
And have grafted a Subaru Legacy sport shifter onto the Prado shifter.
Combined with the new TCU I can go up and down thru the gears without any buttons.
Also not having to move the lever thru to 1st and 2nd....(in these gears you get some engine braking great off road but a little harsh on road)
Arduino TCU is still in prototype....

Interesting... I am in the process of swapping a 1uz into my lj78. Found I can use the 1uz trans with some modifications to the tail section. Might have to look into this as well... Thank you for posting!
